Mail Article - Porn’s obsession with young girls

Apologies if a thread already exists on this article published in the Mail a few days ago.

Tanith Carey author of ‘Girls Uninterrupted’ has written an interesting and equally worrying article in the Mail on Monday. Again, I note it is falling to traditionally right wing papers to raise awareness and publish articles on issues that are specifically facing women.

Carey writes passionately how her own daughter is harassed as soon as she leaves the house. How this is partially due to the expansion of the porn culture and the long term implications for young girls and women. In fact these implications are already with us as seen by the court cases around ‘rough sex’.

The journalist has written a really powerful article calling for women to mobilise, to take action and call for legislation to protect girls.

“We need legislation to prevent porn sites attracting views by showing young girls being raped, abused and harassed.

If we stand by and say nothing, the ones who pay the price are our daughters — in too many ways to count....”

@QuentinWinters

You didn't answer my question. How many boys with their bums out do you see on the street? They don't seem to have a problem with "modest" dressing. Why is being a woman equated with wearing skimpy clothes? Let's not pretend this has anything to do with liberations of women ot their sexuality. Burqa and bikini are just different sides of the same coin. We live in a porn culture where every part of woman's body is fetishized, more nudity won't help and good luck with changing men's attitudes. They think along the lines : You may not be a prostitute, but you sure wear a prostitute's uniform, so I will treat you like that and girls should be told about that not fed lies that being naked is empowered.

I don't think this is really helpfull. How many boys with their ass cheeks out do you see in the street? Women and girls should contribute their share to end rapey porn culture

It's more stuff like Instagram. How many young women are growing up looking at scantily clad models on that site and thinking their body is their main currency and emulate to do the same?

Porn is just the extreme version.

DonnaQuixote · 07/08/2020 11:56

It's Instagram, music videos, films, fashion... girls are being groomed to become sex objects from very young age. It's always been like that, but now it is presented as being their own choice and that makes it even harder to tackle.

If you point out this fact, men will say you are just a jealous, fat prude and many women will say, we must not police women's bodies. But if this hypersexualisation of everything is not adressed nothing will ever change it will just become worse and worse.

QuentinWinters · 07/08/2020 14:47

I don't see men with their bums out, because there isn't pressure on them to dress like that. I do however see lots topless at this time of year, and they arent being harassed or perved on by women.

good luck with changing men's attitudes
There is no incentive at all for men to change attitudes while women work around them. Telling girls "You may not be a prostitute, but you sure wear a prostitute's uniform, so men will treat you like that" does nothing to incentivise men to change.

Making it socially unacceptable to catcall/comment on girls bodies regardless of what they are wearing will

ODFOD. Just walking my dog before i passed many young men with SHOCK HORROR bare chests yes nipples and everything! Guess what! Didnt give me any rapey thoughts or that they were 'asking' for anything. I just cracked on and went about my day.

I agree with this but also that women walking down the street can wear whatever the fuck they want as long as the relevant bits are covered and not be treated like a "prostitute" as you say. Funnily enough, a lot of escorts travel to jobs in jeans you know. And also theres been a big thing on social media of rape survivors wearing thw outfit they were assaulted in- again often jeans and a tshirt- holding a sign saying was i asking for it?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 07/08/2020 21:21

Its not ok to rape or assault prostitutes either you know. A consensual transaction takes place (apart from the poor girls forced into it, i guess u have no respect for them either). Totally fucking different.

@quentinwinters

Sorry meant to quote the original post above you

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 07/08/2020 21:25

The more bits are covered, the more a flash of those bits is seen as titillation, so they need to be covered more.
It's a vicious circle ending in Victorian style head to toe covering, or burkas, so women can be sure they haven't encouraged men.

This x1000000. Rape is rife in countries where women are covered. Ive been on a beach in Ibiza wearing next to nothing, surrounded by people all wearing next to nothing, never felt safer in my life and no one was leering at anyone, just cracked on having a good time!!!!

The DM, as pointed out by one of the writers of Father Ted, publishes a lot of photos of women in their late teens/early twenties in swimwear or revealing clothing. Not as bad as the porn the article mentions, but still it must contribute to the unacceptable harassment young women face.
