In the Sun, of all places!

Worth a read.

That is a good article, SirSam, thanks for the link.

highame · 03/08/2020 09:18

Is that the first time a tabloid has specifically looked at the effects of cancel culture on women?

It didn't use the word misogyny, though the pictures of the trolls were male.

MollyAtTheFolly · 03/08/2020 09:19

Poor Sarah Jane Sad

@MollyAtTheFolly

Poor Sarah Jane Sad
Appalling wasn't it?

I don't see anything incongruous in her being a children's presenter and the Peta ad.

The article mentions mothers on Facebook were attacking her. Peta adverts and campaigns are shocking and are not for the faint- hearted. Most Peta campaigns are not suitable for children to see.

Are the people who complained so stupid they (a) expect a children's presenter to be in character 24/7 and (b) they can't see the parody in that photo? It is clearly not intended to be sexually provocative.

Well clearly they are.

Sorry, posted and dashed earlier, kids' breakfast was ready.

It's one of the better newspaper articles in terms of how it frames JKR I think. Many of them seem to throw out the line "making transphobic comments" (or similar) whereas this - I think - makes the point that she's being accused of transphobia for making an entirely reasonable point. And follows it by highlighting the abuse, inc death and rape threats, she got as a result. Also a lot of detail from Gillian Philips about her support for JKR, the online abuse she got in return, and her job loss.

The more this gets covered by outlets like the Sun the better. It's not a niche twitter issue anymore. People are waking up!!

Awful stories and great to see an article about this in the Sun.

Siablue · 03/08/2020 10:00

This is a brilliant, thoughtful article. Poor Sarah-Jayne she really was treated badly. It sounds like she has done brilliantly to rebuild her life.

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 10:13

I agree OP, it's good to see an article about how cancel culture is impacting women, from the famous and rich to ordinary women. I really like the fact the article talked about what JKR and GP were highlighting on Twitter and the backlash as opposed to the LA Times article which talked about the "ridiculous transphobic" comments by JKR.

But increasingly worrying that it’s the right wing and conservative newspapers et al that are increasingly the only ones taking this stance.
I used to read the Guardian, vote Labour and support LGB+.
Things are so much more complicated now.

Poor Sarah Jane. I remember the furore over the PETA campaign. I'm so glad she is happier now and her husband sounds awesome! I never liked that Justin Fletcher...he always seemed out for himself and self promoting.

RoBollox · 03/08/2020 10:35

Monica Lewinsky talks brilliantly about her experiences at the hand of the media, although not framed as the newly coined cancer culture, her TED talks are excellent examples of resilience in the face of extreme harassment.

RoBollox · 03/08/2020 10:36

Cancel Culture not Cancer Culture, although that's probably some sort of Freudian slip.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/08/2020 11:00

A good article.

Ironic that the tabloid press used to have the monopoly on hounding people.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/08/2020 11:09

Hounding is their job! Mr tumble - well I always have had my eye on that one... watch and wait.

Collidascope · 03/08/2020 11:09

Good article. I've thought of the links between road rage and also the crowds cheering as a "witch" got burnt alive. This tendency is, depressingly, hardwired into human beings, and it's always going to find some channel. We're a really punitive species, aren't we?

DidoLamenting · 03/08/2020 11:19

Why is that worrying?

What is more worrying is the assumption that the lefties are always the good guys and the right is always the bad guys.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/08/2020 11:37

True - the left (some) has always had a looney wing that embraces the shiny, new and bonkers ideology. Read up on Trotsky...

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 03/08/2020 11:54

The point about Justin Fletcher not picking up the phone is well made. Men are more easily forgiven than women.

highame · 03/08/2020 11:55

The left learned a lot from the hard left. Capture and close down, and has sold the idea of being clever, so the MC bought it and the myth has been perpetuated. I was one of those but women's rights is much more important to me than any ideology

I am homeless and at the moment I am just a proud Terf

highame · 03/08/2020 11:56

or even a Tef cause I'm too old to be radical 😁

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 03/08/2020 14:10

Tired feminist would be an apt description for me these days.

merrymouse · 03/08/2020 15:59

The Sarah Jane thing is very strange - I don't have anything against Chris Packham, but he has been very vocal about his views on a variety of animal rights/environmental issues and still seems to be presenting Spring Watch.

As far as I know he hasn't stripped, but the picture of Sarah Jane is hardly nude.

merrymouse · 03/08/2020 16:07

What is more worrying is the assumption that the lefties are always the good guys and the right is always the bad guys.

It's not about goodies and baddies.

People on the right have always been less interested in creating human rights legislation, because they don't believe in state intervention.

On the other hand people on the left theoretically support human rights legislation, but increasingly don't seem to understand what a human right is. This is particularly obvious when organisations like UN Women pretend that sex doesn't exist.
