I love JK Rowling poster removed by Network Rail for being 'political' after 'transphobic' complaint

A poster outside Edinburgh Waverley Station which reads "I love JK Rowling" has been removed by Network Rail for being too "political."

The poster was erected outside the train station by Kellie-Jay Keen, who describes herself as a campaigner against gender recognition laws.

Kellie said that the billboard was a celebration of JK Rowling standing up for women - who Kellie believes are 'victims' of a "culture war".

In a tweet, one local complained to Network Rail saying "You're literally making Edinburgh look an unwelcoming and transphobic city.

"Congratulations. The city has a high population of students and a majority of them are trans allies. Seems unlike our public transport."

Blah Blah

Maybe women should contact Network Rail and say their actions make it look like women are not safe or welcome in Edinburgh. Why are they giving in to sexist bullying?

It's fair to say JKR has really put these issues on the radar. Hard to think Iain Dale would have picked up something like this before:

I know it was discussed a while back, but I've just donated to Lumos with JKR as the honoree and sent the notification with a Happy Birthday message to [email protected]

PumbaasCucumbas · 31/07/2020 08:42

Does this mean all the I 💙 nhs is political too..? I have seen a lot of company PR displaying this (a bit like the pride virtue signalling all over the place).

like JKR, most people approve the work of the nhs and it’s contribution to our society, but it has been in the press lately regarding the Telford (?) maternity care and mesh/valproate scandals. It is routinely sued for negligence.

If the standards applied to JKR were applied across the board, would any individual, body or company pass the purity test?

PumbaasCucumbas · 31/07/2020 08:42

I’m sorry for the whataboutery Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 31/07/2020 08:46

If it's being said as anything other than an individual personal expression then yes, I'd say that's very political, especially in the current context.

The can of worms is well and truly open. Thank you Network Rail, have fun with FOI request

I’ve done that too. Hope it gives her a bit of a boost today to see lots of messages of support.

In fairness to Iain Dale when interviewing Layla Moran the first question he asked was What is a woman

How about a stamp instead?

How about a stamp instead?

I remember that...

What sounds more likely?

A random person putting razor blades behind a poster as a warning not to mess with it?

Someone getting a razor blade and taking a picture to make it look like there was a razor blade behind it?

highame · 31/07/2020 09:46

Someone getting a razor blade and taking a picture to make it look like there was a razor blade behind it?

I might be wrong and it's a generalisation BUT that seems like a masculine action

PumbaasCucumbas · 31/07/2020 10:18

I don’t even know where you‘d get a razor blade without it being encased in plastic with a moisturising strip and costing a fiver....

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/07/2020 10:32

This is cheering. :)

Guessing the Twitter mods haven't quite woken up yet to beat it back down.

Unfortunately a lot of the happybirthday tweets include a donation (real or imaginary) to mermaids

I'd be willing to bet imaginary.

TRAs don't often seem to put their money where their mouths are.

Hence the incredulity with the amount of money feminists can raise in 24 hours.

JackiesArmy · 31/07/2020 11:28

Some of the people using the hashtag are truly awful. In fact, I would call many of them actually disturbed Shock and if they were people I knew in real life I would keep well away.

Siablue · 31/07/2020 13:20

Royal Mail put up a very nice tweet with the Harry Potter stamps and removed it.

Laufeythejust · 31/07/2020 13:42

This is ridiculous. I’ve sent them an email, even if nothing happens the spam will annoy him.

stumbledin · 31/07/2020 14:18

Siablue - What?!?!

So even Harry Potter is now a threat or ...................... ?????

Well, Daniel Radcliffe started it off, can't blame anyone else.......should have thought about the French Revolution

The wonderful thing is, the wokeness and the TRA stuff is beginning to devour itself. Sits back, glass of wine, watches, waits, writes a few letters😁

highame · 31/07/2020 14:29

Terrible grammar, must be the wine

dragoncheeselady · 31/07/2020 15:05

got a response to my email

^Thank you for contacting our chief executive, Andrew Haines, about the removal of the J K Rowling poster at Edinburgh Waverley station. I’m responding as part of Andrew’s correspondence team.

We know that J K Rowling is widely loved and admired for her work and achievements and our decision to remove the poster isn’t a personal reflection on her. The poster was put up in error by one of our advertising partners and was not referred to us for our consideration beforehand.

Our advertising code clearly sets out that we won’t display anything calling for the support of a political viewpoint, policy or action, or that promotes one viewpoint over another. This poster was paid for by a gender recognition reform group, which clearly violates our policy.

We’re reviewing our advertising approval processes with our partners to make sure our policies are applied consistently in the future.

Our use of the rainbow colours in our logo during Pride is to show that we’re proud to be a diverse and inclusive workplace where all our people matter to us^

I found it odd they refer to Standing for Women as a GRA reform group when they are clearly opposed to the GRA Reform

dragoncheeselady · 31/07/2020 15:06

This is my response
The Poster was not paid for by a gender recognition reform group but by a group that supports and fights for the rights of women and girls, and the erasure of sex based rights. Please can you confirm that network rail will refuse to have any advertisement that supports sex based rights?

I am happy to hear that you are proud to be a diverse and inclusive workplace where all our people matter to you. However, I am concerned that this does not include the women that work for you since you seem to be happy to support organisations that are willing to remove the rights of women and girls. Might I suggest that when International Women's day roles around again you make similar changes to your logo to show your support for women and girls and perhaps keep those changes for longer than the single day we get, I suggest a month which is the same amount of time for Pride.
