Just sharing this as I’ve seen this ad discussed on here before.

The ad is pretty abysmal but surprised it's been banned. I'm in the North & thought it would be more frowned upon up here.

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 29/07/2020 23:50

Oh ffs. I know others don’t, but I quite like that advert.
Gets to the point.

Of course people are too delicate to hear a description of how to use a product correctly

The fact that people don’t push their tampons in far enough is only to be spoken about in coded words and hushed tones, less we upset the sensibilities of the menfolk.

It really is pathetic

Psychoseverywhere · 29/07/2020 23:53

Only banned on the Irish channels which are crap anyway. Its a stupid ad though. Scary Spicealike doesnt help its cause.

ExplodingCarrots · 29/07/2020 23:58

I can't believe I'm saying this but I've been having periods for 21 years and have always been afraid of using tampons (DM didn't give a great talk about them when I started) ...I tried recently and I could feel it and it hurt. I then saw this advert and it's embarrassingly taught me how to use them properly. Have been using them since .
It is definitely cringe worthy but it's blunt and straight to the point.

gutentag1 · 30/07/2020 00:13

Banned for providing useful information to women.

VenusTiger · 30/07/2020 00:15

I don't find it offensive at all, but it's a bit Hmm when she winks after saying "get um up there girls!" - will young inexperienced men think we enjoy it or something? Confused weird, it's like one of those ads telling you which meds to use for what ailment and how to use it, but cheaper!

acatcalledjohn · 30/07/2020 00:37

The advert is badly acted and therefore perhaps a bit very cringeworthy but FFS, period adverts with sound advice which otherwise goes largely unspoken isn't crude or offensive and anyone who thinks it is needs to give their head a wobble. If anything this sort of stuff is long overdue.

I swear the complainants must believe that inserting a tampon is just like sex and believe that it could make us orgasm.

acatcalledjohn · 30/07/2020 00:46

...but if you don't want to shove a potentially poisonous blood rag in your hoo ha... Grin

Alongcameacat · 30/07/2020 00:50

Banning this shows Ireland to be so backward which is at odds with more recent laws in many ways. Eighty four complaints and the ad is pulled. The Advertising Standards Agency has shown itself not to be fit for purpose, absolutely ridiculous.

Duemarch2021 · 30/07/2020 00:56

I saw this advert today and didnt think much of it really. In the link it states that the advert is sexualisig tampons by saying: "if you can't feel it then its not in properly" but it doesn't say that on the advert!!!! It actually says: "if you CAN feel it then it's not in properly" which is true... you shouldn't feel a tampon inside. The advert is simply helping women understand how to apply a tampon properly. The marketing is trying to convince women to try tampons again, if they've used them in the past and failed at inserting them correctly which is common. And the added applicator is a marketing strategy so that we choose their brand for ease of application. Not sexualising anything (in my opinion).

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/07/2020 01:00

If it’s for Tampax Compact Pearl they are the worst bloody tampon in history anyway.

Duemarch2021 · 30/07/2020 01:01

Just going to add.... i didnt see her wink 😑 but if she did wink at the end.. then maybe I'm wrong and it actually was an inuendo.. if that's the case ... oh dear 😣 why turn it into something sexual!?

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 30/07/2020 03:31

I don't find it offensive at all, but it's a bit hmm when she winks after saying "get um up there girls!" - will young inexperienced men think we enjoy it or something?

She doesn’t wink after saying this, she winks after she says ‘do it for comfort’ right at the very end of the advert.
I read it as a ‘talk show host, signing off’ type thing, nothing to do with getting a sexual thrill from a tampon.

alexdgr8 · 30/07/2020 03:48

but how is this such a mystery.
don't people read the information leaflet that comes in every packet, with illustration, that covers this very point.
i remember the leaflet specifically says, if you can feel it, it's not in far enough. don't people bother to study instructions anymore, or do the modern generation need everything made into a drama, or comic strip.

ItWasNotOK · 30/07/2020 03:53

The horror of an advert stating that a tampon goes up inside you Shock

FromEden · 30/07/2020 04:00

A complainant said the ad had led to their children asking questions about the issue.

Oh no, children asking questions about normal bodily functions. Whatever next?! Shock

Ffs, what is wrong with this exactly? My DD is 8 and knows about periods and has done for years because she used to follow me everywhere. There is nothing shameful about them so I answered her questions.

eveningfalls · 30/07/2020 04:13

it is offensive on an intellectual level and rightly so banned. We are not fucking idiots, it makes women look like idiots; that anyone would need to watch this ad to get a tampon up beggars belief. AS @alexdgr8 said don't people read the information leaflet that comes in every packet, with illustration, that covers this very point

ItWasNotOK · 30/07/2020 04:22

@eveningfalls I read the packet many times as a teenager but it was still uncomfortable for some time til I got it right. Great that you never had that issue but I doubt I'm the only one.

I don't think it's the greatest advert ever but should it really be banned? It's not been banned because it's shit, it's been banned because it's offensive.

You’re not the only one, I read the leaflet but never got it right, stopped using tampons at about 16 as they were always too uncomfortable. I think the ‘not the tip, up to the grip’ or whatever it says would have been very useful to a teenage me.
The only offensive thing about this advert is that it’s corny and shitely acted, which in my estimation would mean that 90% of adverts should be banned.

Oh bless you, but please don't worry about us Menfolk. A sawdust staircase straw poll indicates that most mens' reaction to the ad would fall into the categories of either 'unconcerned' and 'very unconcerned'. Wink
Deathgrip · 30/07/2020 09:15

On what planet is “not just the tip, up to the grip” offensive? It’s an instruction, and a pretty benign one at that.

The only thing that’s offensive about this is the acting

Roswellconspiracy · 30/07/2020 09:15

Offensive? Really?

I mean its childish, patronising and doesn't once consider the fact that their product is the issue and not womens bodies and incapabilties but I wouldnt say it was offensive

Deathgrip · 30/07/2020 09:18

You can cut out the condescension right there. Do you honestly think advertising for sanitary products would be so euphemistic and sanitised if only women were viewing them? It’s only very recently that adverts moved away from the sterile blue liquid demos - do you think that’s for womens’ benefit? We know what blood on sanitary products looks like.

VickyEadieofThigh · 30/07/2020 09:28

Ads that offend me: all those fucking 'death insurance' ads that are on during every ad break in the daytime.

Ads that don't offend me: those which are trying to help women and girls manage their periods better.
