Pronouns

As many workplaces move towards ‘voluntarily’ adding pronouns to email signatures.

I think we should all use he/him. Regardless of our sex. You don’t need to be a man but studies have shown women are disadvantaged in the workplace when people are reminded that they are women.

Would HR challenge you?

Identify as a plural neuter-gendered Icelander*:

Þau Þau Þeim Þeirra

When they can't pronounce it, because they don't know their eths from their thorns, get very upset and take to the cleaners for misgendering.

*Old English would work too Grin

Seriously, about using he/him when female... patriarchy ensures it is always a "heads I win, tails you lose" situation whichever way you try to play the game, so best to try to not play the game at all.

@DaisiesandButtercups - though all theoretical you've given me quite something to think about there!!

I don't have an email signature, but when at workshops and the like and asked to introduce myself with 'my name, my pronoun and why I'm there' I always skip the pronoun answer. Never been challenged, always referred to as she funnily enough.

I did a random google on " research shows women do less well when reminded of their gender"

She/his all the way.

My company sent an email round about a year ago advising that we can put pronouns in our emails if we wished. I'm yet to see an email from someone who has actually done it which is good.

I remember reading someone on Twitter some time ago who said they identified as Michael Jackson and their preferred pronouns are He/He!

Gurufloof · 29/07/2020 16:58

Why would the recipient of your email need to know how you think of yourself

So that when they are talking about you when your not even there, they cannot misgender you, if they do you can take them to the cleaners.

I've got sex based like my oppression and no one has said anything yet.
If forced I'm going to declare I, me and mine. I will sue the pants of anyone who misgender me deliberately or not. If suing the pants wont work I'll get em sacked.

Or more likely just shrug and say well when you have to remember (in my workpkace) 650 pronouns your bound to get it wrong a lot.

It's like atheism - the absence of belief has to have equivalent protection as belief.

So, my absence of belief in 'gender identity' is equally as valid and just as much to be respected as other people's choices to suggest which pronouns they would like other people to use.

Equally, judgement of using whichever pronoun seems most appropriate should also be respected. It's farcical to imagine that we can, as a society, start to dictate how other people perceive us.

If I worked in a company that insisted on pronouns (which I thankfully don't) I would insist on "Oh Captain/My Captain".

TehBewilderness · 29/07/2020 22:51

Pronouns cannot function as correction fluid for those dissatisfied with reality.
