Just that really. With best wishes to Jenni on your retirement (you never know, she might read FWRWink).

Will be interesting to see who picks up the role.

picklemewalnuts · 24/07/2020 13:38

I'm sad to see Jenni go, however perhaps she'll have more freedom out with the Beeb.

I shall be listening to WH very closely, in her absence. I do hope I don't have to leave. There's not a lot left on R4 that I like.

NeurotrashWarrior · 24/07/2020 14:04

Maybe they'll do a wider selection of different people? Keep JG as the main anchor but swap different people around. I'd like to hear Megah Mohan on more for example. Being the "gender and identity bbc correspondent" you'd think it was all identity politics but she does some really hard hitting good journalism on women and racial issues across the world.

Shedbuilder · 24/07/2020 14:46

HollowTalk, no, sadly I don't have the time to listen to WH every day but I do listen regularly and have done since I was a child.

Yes, it's clear from the occasional comment that Garvey is a woman who gives whinging men and handmaidens short shrift. I know that she's the mother of daughters, too. But whether she's a thought-through feminist, whether she's ever done any reading, or whether it's just because she's a woman of a certain who's had enough of men mithering I don't know. Just as I haven't the faintest idea of her personal politics. Maybe that's because she's so diplomatic and good at being neutral.

Murray, on the other hand, I've never felt any doubts about. She has been one of the women who've helped make me the radical feminist that I am.

I think WH needs a shake-up at the moment and Emma Barnett would certainly do that. She's a feminist, but not a woke one — check out the Period video linked upthread.

NeurotrashWarrior · 24/07/2020 15:31

Would Emma accept the status quo on WH? Jenni was clearly never able to voice her true feelings again.

3timeslucky · 24/07/2020 16:38

I'll miss her hugely.

I never knew what she looked like til I opened this thread. But she has the perfect voice to go with her perfect mind. A most fabulous woman!

She'll be a hard act to follow.

Some detail on JMs departure in Private Eye

Dame Jenni Murray retiring
highame · 29/07/2020 15:02

Yes @Abitofalark We might get a 20yr old Miss Wokeness who calls us all Karens. Can't wait

ThePurported · 29/07/2020 15:04

What a sorry state of affairs. Woman's Hour presenter isn't allowed to discuss certain topics that affect women Hmm

Her replacement will almost certainly be someone who toes the TWAW line. Or a male presenter. Why not.

Xanthangum · 29/07/2020 15:08

They get to the question of her replacement too....Grin

Dame Jenni Murray retiring
PoppySeedSaid · 29/07/2020 15:20

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't replace her with a regular presenter and just use the bank of hosts they currently rely on when JM or JG are on holiday. That way they can give more women opportunities at the BBC and call in 'youth' presenters depending on the topic.

ThePurported · 29/07/2020 15:21
Grin I'm going to renew my lapsed PE sub.
Shedbuilder · 29/07/2020 15:26

The Purported, this is such a glaringly obvious case of supposed neutrality allowing injustice to thrive. Desmind Tutu said this:

I am not neutral about systemic racism, and my intention is to clearly share my lack of neutrality with resolve and care. If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.

The BBC has been acting as an agent of women's oppression in its constant promotion of trans issues. It held back the climate discussion for a decade by insisting on including climate change deniers every time climate was discussed, even though the vast majority of the scientists in the field accepted the concept of climate change. It legitimised Nigel Farage and the Brexit campaign by including him in so many panel discussions in the name of fairness and neutrality.

I think we need to be very cautious whenever anyone makes claims to being neutral.

Abitofalark · 29/07/2020 21:50

I thought for a minute that was a younger Ann Widdecombe in the photo but it's Eddie Redmayne!

www.telegraph.co.uk/radio/what-to-listen-to/womans-hours-full-woke-overload-proved-bbc-timid-tackle-intolerant/

Article in today’s telegraph criticising Jane Garvey’s failure to challenge super woke guests in a conversation around “allyship”. I didn’t hear the segment - it was last Friday apparently, and called something like “Standing up for your Mates”.

An extract from the article:
“... she nodded along with every woke word her guests said. Garvey forgot how to be a journalist and came off like a Loose Women host, throwing her guests inane lowballs.

These included gems such as..."Daniellé, do you ever get tired of feeling an obligation to speak out?" (Dash said she may be black, a woman and queer, but she recognised that there were people even more marginalised than her and she never got tired of speaking out on their behalf); "Daniellé, do you feel that, far from improving, things might actually be getting worse?" (to which Dash replied, inevitably, "yes", especially in terms of trans people); and, finally, "Chloe, doing nothing is not going to get us anywhere is it?" Chloe confirmed and recommended everyone start with upbraiding their friends and family.

Why didn’t Garvey interrogate her subjects? I would have liked Garvey to ask Laws if she’d been an ally to Rowling when the author was burnt on the Twitter stake. Or asked Brave – who claims he has a “zero tolerance rule” for misogyny - how he squares that with the pictures he tweets of half-naked women, twerking or being called ‘Thotet’ (slang for slut?).”

sultanasofa · 12/08/2020 16:08

I heard this piece about 'allies' and it infuriated me. I dashed off an angry email to Woman's Hour.

StandUpStraight · 12/08/2020 16:31

sultan I suppose I will have to listen to it and write a similar email, having stopped listening to woman’s hour for exactly this kind of reason. I really hope they choose someone (a) interested in actual women and issues that affect them and (b) with a spine.

ChattyLion · 04/09/2020 11:49

They just announced that Fi Glover is off away too
www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54026689

Who’s going to replace them on Woman’s Hour?

ChattyLion · 04/09/2020 11:50

Whoops sorry Jane Garvey!!

merrymouse · 04/09/2020 12:02

I'm not surprised that Jane Garvey is leaving.

From comments she made on the Fortunately podcast, I think she was a bit bored with it.

Angryresister · 04/09/2020 12:16

I listen to WH a lot and sometimes it has very good items and interviews. However the muzzling of the main presenters and ignoring very important discussions make me dread who might be appointed next. If they appoint men I will never listen again.

Doyoumind · 04/09/2020 12:44

I wonder where WH will go now with both presenters leaving. Only half jokingly I wonder whether the new presenters will actually be female.

ChattyLion · 07/09/2020 09:44

Emma Barnett is going to be doing it! I think she’ll be good www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54055270

Antibles · 07/09/2020 10:48

Very best wishes to Jenni Murray on her retirement. Her voice has been a wonderful part of the radio landscape. I too hope she will write her memoirs!

Jeeeez · 07/09/2020 11:58

I think Emma's only doing Mon-Thurs so there's another day to fill, unless they bin Friday's edition - which seems very unlikely.

ChattyLion · 08/09/2020 05:50

There’s more details in this article here: www.theguardian.com/media/2020/sep/07/emma-barnett-to-host-bbc-radio-4s-womans-hour
