The misogyny here is vomit inducing. A woman being berated for NOT refusing to wear a face mask just not shopping as much, while men are drinking and fighting in those magic pubs where the virus cant be passed on.

He tried to say she was refusing to wear a mask and then berated her for not wanting to walk around John Lewis with one on.

She wasnt refusing to wear a mask She just said she would be shopping a bit less.

Gaslighting prick

OP posts:
IloveJKRowling · 22/07/2020 09:32

once you have to wear masks in shops, people are going to be far less inclined to just go in for a browse, they are going to get their essentials and go

And if we want life to get as close to normal as possible, this is actually a good thing. We need to keep levels of the virus low or we're back in lockdown / overwhelmed hospitals / people dying in large numbers (example - see Texas). The shorter the amount of time people are in sharing an enclosed space, the lower the risk.

It's a shame, yes but it's what happens in a pandemic. We can't deny covid biology.

Having the position that woman has is absolutely fine and actually better for public health at large.

And yes, JOB is a nasty, misogynistic bully as he's displayed on many an occasion.

AntsInPenzance · 22/07/2020 09:40

Not sure how this is misogynistic as his argument doesn't seem to have anything to do with her being a woman.

AntsInPenzance · 22/07/2020 09:42

Also I'm pretty sure that women can go to pubs and men can go shopping. Sorry, just not seeing the supposed misogyny Confused

damnthatanxiety · 22/07/2020 09:49

@Destroyedpeople

I don't even know who this O Brien character is. Don't understand why feminism threads are clogged up with what some obscure misogynist has said.
He's not obscure. In any case, why isn't this thread the place to discuss misogyny???Hmm
Destroyedpeople · 22/07/2020 09:51

Yes of course. But you get what I am saying too right?
As women we spend way too much time discussing what sad little men have said about this or that when they are just talking bollocks. It's how we have been socialised.
We should starve them of oxygen... not literally...Grin

Justhadathought · 22/07/2020 09:59

I do feel sorry for the caller herself, I do wonder how aware a (?middle aged) John Lewis shopper who doesn’t shop online, who phones in to a radio show in good faith, knew she’d end up being trolled and bullied by randoms on Twitter

She's not middle aged. This is know, because it was my daughter ( single parent). I've warned her to keep away from twitter....I knew as soon as she said 'John Lewis' she'd be getting dismissed as a "middle aged, middle class, right wing bigot". TBH, I'm not even sure why she rang in. She loves an argument and a debate, and can sometimes be contrarian.

She's inherited the J.Lewis thing from me. I don't like shopping for leisure, and I certainly don't like internet shopping...and can get most of what I want in there, all under one roof. She however, does most shopping on-line anyway.

I wear a mask when I'm in there...and it certainly won't put me off...although I agree it can get a bit uncomfortable.

What this episode evidences is how much people project on to what others say to suit their own prejudices and agendas, be they about age, class status, political persuasion, or whatever.

Collidascope · 22/07/2020 10:01

@ThatsHowWeRowl

Argh, just watched it again - right from the start, he is screwing up his face as if he cannot understand what she is saying at all. He literally doesn't have a neutral face on him, as if he is actually listening and thinking, for any of it. He knows he is being filmed and it will be going on social media.

I wonder if that's what he does with his wife at home - when she starts talking, he starts pulling that face as if she is being soooooo ridiculous? It is gaslighting actually isn't it?

It's bizarre, isn't it? She isn't saying anything remotely controversial or idiotic, while coming out with ridiculous statements like she should go six times for twenty minutes, and she's the unreasonable one? He's basically ordering her to do the consumerist equivalent of "lie back and think of England." You won't enjoy it but it's good for the country so get on with it, woman!
Collidascope · 22/07/2020 10:02

*while he's coming out with

MsSafina · 22/07/2020 10:15

I call him JOBbie. I think that sums him up really.

MsSafina · 22/07/2020 10:24

On Facebook I find the same people who have become the mask police were loudly praising the BLM demos a few weeks ago. I'm willing to bet JOBbie was a huge fan of those demos. In fact, the most infected group of people are 18-24, most of whom would have attended those demos.

PumbaasCucumbas · 22/07/2020 10:25

justhadathought I’m sorry if I made a presumption, I apologise to your daughter. It also sounds like she’s more aware about how the interweb works than my mum would.

Can I ask if she is upset by it or is she familiar enough with twitter to brush it all off?

PumbaasCucumbas · 22/07/2020 10:29

(I think my other reason for presumptions about age was at my mask-insisting workplace, the majority of complaints about wearing them has been from middle aged ladies, possibly a combination of hot flushes and steamy glasses)

Don't worry! She's not! she finds it all quite amusing......She's actually quite a contrarian, and is a bit obsessed with news media in every form. She's quite an unusual person, and not what many would expect at all from listening to her quite pleasant and 'reasonable' voice. Haha!

I'd never heard of him, although now I see the clip it's clear he is what once used to be called a 'shock jock'. Honestly, social media is so bad for mental health and certainly bad for political discourse.

Justhadathought · 22/07/2020 10:39

Haha! It's me that's middle aged. I'm 54....but I just love the image of a middle aged lady in "steamed up glasses". I had a very early menopause at age 38......so the intense hot flushes have long receded.

Justhadathought · 22/07/2020 10:41

i actually think it is older men who are the most resistant. Younger people seem to be happy to wear a mask, almost like a sign of tribal belonging. Those who resist face masks are positioned as being "right wing bigots" and so on.

Funny world!

PumbaasCucumbas · 22/07/2020 10:48

Maybe they’ll all change their mind now “right wing bigot” in-chief says it’s patriotic Grin

(amazing how he can even turn a public health message into a xenophobic statement)

PumbaasCucumbas · 22/07/2020 10:50

(But maybe that’s a whole other thread)

nettie434 · 22/07/2020 10:53

I'd never heard of him, although now I see the clip it's clear he is what once used to be called a 'shock jock'.

This made me laugh Justhadathought. Someone telling James O'Brien that they have never heard of him and that he is a shock jock. He believes he is 'leading Britain's conversation'.

Why would anyone bother to call in if that is how they thought they would be treated? No wonder it is usually those with the strongest views who are heard on radio phone ins. Going back to the beginning of this thread, it is an important topic for feminists. Women who are less strident speakers become fair game for some radio presenters and we, as in the general public, are probably less likely to hear what the silent majority think.

PumbaasCucumbas · 22/07/2020 11:00

The reach is just so much wider with twitter too, if someone blithers some nonsense on the Jeremy vine show, I can mutter “silly man” while I wash up, but there’s no pile-on and no way that he can know my opinion of him.

Twitter is brutal, and I think it’s particularly harsh when people get derided, piled on or meme-ified when they would never have posted on a video on a public forum themselves.

Childrenofthestones · 22/07/2020 11:01

JOB is a renowned goady twat who, as Posie discovered has his thumb on the scales with a silence switch that he uses multiple times through any calls where people hold their own against him.

People saying the is insignificant are missing the point. He is popular with left wing viewers and until he dropped a bollock recently(and rode back PDQ when Twatter turned on him) has been busy drip feeding the trans agenda to many already receptive ears and gatekeeping against alternative views.

Katharinablum · 22/07/2020 12:11

The thing is LBC is full of them. Nick Ferrari affects this stuttering manner when someone (usually a woman) says something (usually left wing) he doesn’t agree with. He’s just a Tory apologist. They’ve just got rid of Farage - enough said Grin
I don’t mind O’brien in small doses, he doesn’t suffer fools, male or female and was pretty incisive during all the Brexit shenanigans. I’ve been never heard him cut someone off though.

DrDavidBanner · 22/07/2020 13:56

@Justhadathought Sorry your daughter had to put up with that. For what its worth I agree with her. I have only been to a few shops since lock down has eased and its certainly changed my attitude to shopping. I used to enjoy a mooch around the shops but now I don't see the point. You have to queue, wear a face mask and can't try on clothes in the shops. Its easier to just buy online or make a specific journey if you really need something. I don't know what was hard for him to understand.

Like others have said I'm glad I'm not his wife Grin

DidoLamenting · 22/07/2020 14:09

@ThatsHowWeRowl

And what she is saying is totally true - rightly or wrongly, once you have to wear masks in shops, people are going to be far less inclined to just go in for a browse, they are going to get their essentials and go. And yes, meanwhile the men get to go to their pubs and golf clubs without wearing one.
Your last sentence is a non point. Women go to pubs and play golf. I really don't see the point of diluting what was a valid criticism of James O'Brien by dragging in a completely spurious and irrelevant" poor women are so hard done by" whinge.
HeIenaDove · 22/07/2020 14:37

Women do indeed go to golf clubs and pubs. But they are traditionally male pursuits.

OP posts:
DidoLamenting · 22/07/2020 14:43

What a blinkered view of life. Some feminists seem as overly invested in maintaining rigid gender roles as TRA extremists.

Re pubs are you thinking of pre WW1? And even then even a cursory examination of working class Victorian London life gives lie to the idea that women didn't go to pubs.
