Coronavirus Test website sex/gender

When one books a test one is asked for one’s Gender (options Male or Female only). When one requests to give feedback on the same website, for example to point out that for clarity it should be asking one’s Sex not Gender, one of the metadata that is requested is one’s Sex (with several options such as prefer not to say). I would have thought that for a disease like covid19 which clearly does know that sex is male or female, the website would be designed more carefully in order to collect quality data.

As a trans woman, I would answer Female for either.

Sex is the only thing that matters when it comes to Covid. Covid doesn't give a shit about your gender. Noting down gender instead of sex will skew results.

These games need to stop when it comes to health.

*skew the statistics, even.

It clearly means “sex”, otherwise it would include the long list of other genders that now exist. Your disregard for those other genders seems rather transphobic.

And as such there is no point in collecting gender. There is no biological difference between a male who identifies as masculine and a male who identifies as feminine. If you were taking cross sex hormones/had a gonadectomy then that might be relevant but should be addressed separately as it doesn’t make you female (I am talking hypothetically here - I don’t need to know your private information).

On the other hand there is a clear value in collecting sex which they have ignored.

Aren't you potentially risking your health if you identify as female for a virus where males are at higher risk?

Fearandsurprise · 17/07/2020 13:31

Could an organisation be challenged to define the purpose of collecting the data, so needs to explain why “gender” is needed. If it is for diversity monitoring, it needs to expand the range of options, including but not limited to adding “none” and “prefer not to say”.

The UK’s information Commissioner’s office requires data collected to be relevant to the stated purpose:

Coronavirus doesn't affect you based on your internal feelings, it affects you more if you're male.

If I were a transactivist I'd be keen on both sex and gender being asked about, so that I could know if there was any statistical difference for people undergoing hormone treatments etc.

Oxyiz · 17/07/2020 13:34

They've probably decided though that for less than 1% of the population it doesn't matter if they have different outcomes.

And deny researchers the opportunity to investigate whether males who identify as trans and who may be receiving cross-sex hormones are at a lower, equal or higher risk than other males. Which may help them understand why males are twice as likely to die and help them find ways to prevent this from happening.

Are some personal identities truly this fragile that they cannot tolerate taking a backseat to the needs of medical researchers to have accurate information?

Do you not think you should prioritise other male bodied people’s health over your need for validation? By being dishonest in your answer you and others who don’t accept their born sex, are potentially putting other male bodied people at risk. Men’s health matters too, you know.
Abhannmor · 17/07/2020 15:28

That might be a fatal error. Your immune system is weaker than that of a biological woman. Which is why men are suffering more deaths and serious after effects presumably. The virus doesn't care about our identities - just our biology.

sashagabadon · 17/07/2020 15:30

Yes i noticed that too but let it go. Numbers would be so low as to be negligible

So do "trans women" wash their hands properly, avoid risks, wear a mask when men wouldn't, social distance as well as women, have less risky jobs, smoke less than men............etc. Even if the answer is yes to all behavioural factors you are still biologically male, fact, and thats relevant here more than anywhere else.
