Just posting in case any one is interested. Only just seen it on facebook.

-----
Awareness of the impact of advertising and media consumption on people’s body image has increased in recent years. Negative body image is widely perceived as solely a young women’s problem. But more recently, research has shown that this is a wider issue:

  • Recent studies report that over a third of adults feel anxious or depressed about their body image, and nearly half (44%) want to see greater diversity in the mainstream media.
  • NHS studies have shown that 57% of young men felt pressured by social media to look good, and 23% believed there to be a ‘perfect male body.’
  • The Mental Health Foundation reported in a recent study that 40% of LGBT+ adults felt shame because of their body image.
  • 80% of disabled people surveyed by Trailblazers said that their body image has a direct impact on their mental well-being.

The Women and Equalities Committee want to hear from a range of people and organisations on what causes poor body image and how people’s body image is impacted by companies, adverts, social media and Government policy.

I'll be having a look at that.

It needs more publicity.

Shame they didn't publicise it wider then!

Its really strange. Just came across it by chance while looking for something else.

You would think they would make an effort to publicise it.

Or maybe they tried and msm have a vested interest in not making it widely known. Confused

There’s a quick-fire survey as well

forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=nt3mHDeziEC-Xo277ASzSjmyhv4Lz8tPuToBKZcY2O9UMjVPVUZNN01ETDNKNFFaN0M3QlVQMjQzWS4u

Interestingly for the demographic info they have separate questions on: your sex (male/female/other/prefer not to say), your gender identity (man/woman/other/prefer not to say) whether you identify as trans (yes/no/prefer not to say), and “Is your gender the same that you were assigned at birth?” (yes/no/prefer not to say)..... so close, WEC, so close. I could almost answer all of those questions honestly without having to lie just to submit my questionairre answers.

Thanks for the quick fire survey link, I've just done it. And yes, good to see they want to know what sex I am. Just a shame they spoiled it with assigned sex at birth.

NothingTraLaLa · 17/07/2020 10:01

Just completed the quick version.

They need that last demographic question though. We've seen transwomen claiming to be female, and also I think India Willoughby identifies as a cis woman rather than trans.

stumbledin · 17/07/2020 14:23

Thanks for that quick link!

Wonder why they have that when they make such a fuss about you must read the background paper before answering the question.

And in terms of Equality, how ageist to lump everyone over 55 together.

Given that women are now meant to work to 65/66 you would have thought they would at least have had that as a separate age group.

No space for comments as there were a number of questions where they should have had but didn't none - eg I dont have a gender.

Thanks for this. Haven't seen this publicised anywhere.
