In the wake of Action Aid's dismissal of the relevance of biological sex you might be interested to support this charity which clearly centres females.

www.ethiopiaid.org.uk

Much of their work is targeted at helping women and girls. They run hospitals repairing obstetric fistula and prolapses. They train midwives and distribute period kits to girls to keep them in school.

They also run safe houses for women and girls fleeing from violence and needing support in the Coronavirus pandemic. They're also working on projects to stop FGM and prevent early marriage.

Take a look.

Thank you

Thank you for this. I am reviewing all my charitable giving and focusing it on women and girls in developing countries, and where the charities spend most of the money on them.
I will absolutely include this one in my giving.

I hope you don't mind, can we use this thread to recommend other charities? I would particularly be interested in finding one to support girls in India.

RummidgeGeneral · 16/07/2020 17:32

No, please go ahead and recommend others too.

This inspired me to check Womankind Worldwide who I've donated to for donkeys years. Ffs. "Face violence because of bother their gender and their gender identity." ??
I think I'll change to this one instead. I feel taking someone's money and spending it on males when you've claimed you'll spend it on women is pretty disingenuous. I also don't like that they're retweeting articles that attempt to shut down debate over something that patently affects the group they claim to advocate for.

I can't do as good a breakdown for this charity as done in the ActionAidUK thread for them but I see 91% of donations go on charitable giving.

Further from their accounts on the charity commission website:
"To ensure that the utmost public benefit will be received and the maximum amount of money can be forwarded to its partners, the charity keeps it costs to a minimum, maintaining a business model of facilitating action in Ethiopia, but minimising action aside from fundraising in the UK."
beta.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?subid=0&regid=802353

Their spend seems to be through grants to local charities, including (for 2018):

The Hamlin Fistual Hospital
Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA)
AWSAD
Cheshire Services Ethiopia
Cheshire Livelihoods Project
Facing Africa (Noma)
Destitute Elders' Welfare and Development Association (DEWADA)

Thank you - am really interested in checking this out. Would very much want to try to support global development that centres women - partly from feminist principles, and partly because all aid policies say that's the single most effective way to improve outcomes, especially for children, but in fact across all measures.

Another good one is the White Ribbon Alliance. Their mission is for safe, respectful maternity care, around the world. They do good work for women, in places such as Afghanistan, Malawi, India, Yemen, Uganda, Indonesia, as well as the UK where the focus is on refugee women. Their mission is to ensure safety and respect for women, from pregnancy through the birth and then post-partum, and care of the newborn, too. They are an autonomous network, with a model that empowers local women in each member country to run their own organisation.

Thank you - great suggestions for charities to support.

There are so many smaller orgs doing amazing work for women and girls.

I read this story recently spotlightinitiative.org/withher/stories/rashidat-mohammed

Human rights lawyer and barrister Rashidat Mohammed, 34, wakes up before sunrise to say her prayers, make breakfast for her three children and pack their school bags. Once she’s dropped them at school, she drives to her office in the centre of Sokoto. Here, she fights for the rights of the region’s most vulnerable people.

Thank you

fistulafoundation.org/ this is a female centred charity I have contributed to

2Rebecca · 16/07/2020 18:59

Although looking at the covid stuff it looks like they have enough money for women with fistulas and money is now going in to a generic Africa Covid charity which is fine if you that's what you want to donate to. I hope they've operated on all the women though

Thank you. Really helpful.
