Morning all,

I was prompted to ask for your help after reading the Actin Aid thread: didn't want to hijack that thread though Blush

I contribute regular amounts to charities, as I'm sure many of you do. But ..... I've started to wonder –and yes, goodness only knows why I'm so late to the party – if any of them may have similar views to Action Aid. If so, I'd like to divert my money elsewhere.

For the record, my charities are:

  • Shelter
  • Oxfam
  • British Red Cross
  • World Vision
  • Guide Dogs
  • Salvation Army
  • MND Association
  • Derbyshire Air Ambulance

Does anyone know happen to know about any of the above and their stance on women's rights? Or is it a case of me writing to them and asking the searching questions?

Thanks in advance.

Have a great day Smile

re the Sally Army

bit of a curate's egg

They do some excellent work in helping estranged family members find one another.

They also do some excellent work with trafficking survivors

The below video is of an investigation into City Hearts, a controversial Christian organisation that the SA referred trafficking survivors to, and, as far as I am aware, still refers survivors to.

I have concerns about City Hearts and a controversial similar organisation, Mercy Ministries, (that appears to be linked to City Hearts via social media - I need to research this further).

Please be advised that there is an exgtremely vulnerble, mentally unwell person making and uploading videos "exposing" City Hearts and another extremely controversial organisation that I have very serious concerns about.

This is a situation very familair to me, as it happens with, for example The Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, an organisation with many disturbing elements that is the focus of many batshit conspiracy theories that mask the reality of the real issues.

Really pushed for time

It's not the same issue but there was a report in the Times June 2019 that there were ongoing problems with sex for aid at Oxfam:

The allegations relate to incidents in African refugee camps where aid workers have been promising to pay teenage girls’ school fees in return for sex and trading basic food and supplies for sexual favours.

I would shift all my money to Lumos, JKR's Charity for women and girls.

All of the big ones are lost now I think, even if you ignore their TWAW stance the enormous executive salaries is enough to put me off.

I pull out my list of charities a bit later.

I stopped my standing order of many decades to Shelter because Ruth Hunt (Stonewall) was a trustee. I don't know if she's still a trustee but it felt like their connection to Stonewall was too close.

HuckfromScandal · 16/07/2020 09:57

I have moved everything to Lumos.

Doyoumind · 16/07/2020 11:25

I've had to cancel most of my remaining charity donations recently due to the virus and money issues, but I had already Save the Children and NSPCC some time ago aftet losing faith with them. Lumos is a good call. Hopefully I will be in a position to donate again soon and that will be where I'm looking to put my money.

OhHolyJesus · 16/07/2020 11:32

Just coming back on your list OP

Shelter

  • Oxfam - safeguarding failures
  • British Red Cross - unsure best to check
  • World Vision -Christian org? Probably safe
  • Guide Dogs - that's fine, pretty sure they can tell Male from female
  • Salvation Army - I would hope safe
  • MND Association - again probably fine
  • Derbyshire Air Ambulance - serves all so also fine I imagine

I support smaller charities where I'm lucky enough to personally know those who run them. I also support animal charities, donkey sanctuaries, cats protection league. I've always done this as animals don't have a voice but even more so now I just care less about humans. Sounds harsh I know, but I only have so much left and that's my priority. That and the numerous crowdfunders!

The only way to know for sure is to write to them and ask them.

I do hope many redirect cash to Lumos though. I'm considering it or maybe a one off donation.

As well as JKR's Lumos, the Centre for Women's Justice is doing some sterling work.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 16/07/2020 12:15

Thank you all for your replies, especially @OhHolyJesus for going through my list Smile

Yes, I believe that Oxfam and Shelter are the two thorny issues.

Thanks for the heads up on Lumos: I hadn't heard of that.

@doyoumind what's the problem with Save the Children?

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/07/2020 12:22

Nicelegs you may want to skim through the last 20 posts on the other thread and find RedToothBrush's research on the breakdown of exactly what money was being spent on - essentially Action Aid are spending far, far more on political lobbying for their preferred social change in the UK than they are on any on the ground needs in the developing world. Their attitude to women and girls is ridiculously offensive, but the breakdown of their spending is just as shocking.

I'd suggest researching carefully in this way now for any of the large, multi million charities. I doubt many Action Aid direct debiters realise they've been funding UK political lobbying more than they've been funding any on the ground help for the women and children in all the adverts.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 16/07/2020 13:24

@Michelleoftheresistance Big thanks for that: I'll check it out Smile

The Centre For Women's Justice are completely fantastic. They're fighting so hard to push back against the effective decriminalisation of rape, just for a start.
