The coronavirus has put paid to many of our plans, and group meetings and conferences seem to be a thing of the past. As well as a couple of feminist meetings I had made arrangements to attend, this year's Filia conference has been cancelled. It was my end of the country and last years conference sounded so inspiring, I was really looking forward to the chance to attend this year. Of course a few missed events is the least of our worries and I'm not here to complain.

I have started attending (is that the right word?) webinars, and have really enjoyed them so I thought I'd spread the word and post some links.

Nordic Model Now hosted a webinar on Porn, Prostitution and violence against women last month. I particularly enjoyed the first presentation, a Historical View which was well researched and very interesting.

Here is a link to watch/listen on catch up.

Women's Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) host a weekly webinar on Saturday afternoons. There are usually a range of speakers from around the world and it is so interesting to hear what is going on in other countries. I signed up for one a few weeks ago and now get a weekly reminder and can just log into zoom to listen and join in with the chat feature.

This week’s questions will be about: Lesbian feminism and transgenderism

This week’s panelists are:

Tonje Gjevjon Norway
Denise Thompson Aus
Ann Menache USA
Ana Pratts Spain
Lucia Giansiracusa Italy

Hopefully the link will work, it's copied from my email.

The Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation 2020 Global Summit
has masses of talks arranged. I'm not sure how many one can attend free, without signing up for a paid membership.
I've booked onto a talk by Jennifer Lahl A Modern Handmaid's Tale:Connections between Surrogacy and Exploitation.

I might book onto one of the others as well.

Some other online women's events listed here on a number of issues:

Not in date order so keep scrolling!

Thanks stumbledin that's an interesting resource.

I forgot to say the Global summit one above has a lot of sessions relating to child sexual exploitation on line which would be interesting for parents of young children. There was a piece about this in radio 4 Today at about 7:25.

This is really good, thanks OP! Will check them out.

I especially like the ones you can watch back if you can't 'attend' live.

This is a right wing anti-abortion, anti-LGB organisation that is worthy of further research.

wiki here

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Center_on_Sexual_Exploitation

Unfortunately there are countless human rights, anti-trafficking and women's leadership organisations and events that are in fact not what they appear to be on initial perusal.

I hate posting stuff like this because it sometimes feels like I am calling out people and organisations left right and centre.

Readers must show due dilligence when recommending links and organisations to other readers, especially if the link / organisation requires email registration.

Thanks for the tip off hoodathunkit

It's true - I hadn't done due diligence!

However, for me, surrogacy is a single issue and I don't much care (within limits) who I join with in protest. I do think issues regarding abortion are much more polarised in the USA and being in the UK we can be unaware of this. I don't believe abortion will ever be an electoral issue here so whilst religious groups may have their day it doesn't demarcate into a left/right/hard right issue. At least not for most people.

You're welcome

I have failed in this respect also on various occasions so don't feel bad about it :)

Due diligence should be the new normal, just like wearing facemasks

The thing is most issues are nuanced and so it will happen that we may find ourselves agreeing with a person or organisation we disgree with on some issues but agree with on others.

All of this is fine of course. My concerns are primarily about data harvesting and astroturfing

Anyway, as you were :)

Thanks for this, really helpful

I found the recent WoLF panel, “Women Speak! How the Sex Industry Dehumanizes Women and Incites Male Violence” really compelling. Speakers are from India, Japan, and South Korea.
