Hey all - I got this from Labour Women's Declaration today but you don't have to be a Labour supporter to write to your MP in support:
Dear Supporter
Announcement on the Gender Recognition Act Consultation
We are writing to you as a signatory to and/or supporter of the Labour Women’s Declaration. You are receiving this email because you attended the #ExpelMe rally in March, signed the Declaration, signed up on our website, or attended the LWD meeting held in London in February.
If you would rather not receive emails in the future, please let us know.
We wanted to write to you at this point in time to share with you some information we have about an impending announcement due from Liz Truss, the Secretary of State for Women and Equalities concerning the outcome of the consultation on proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. We understand this announcement is imminent, and could be as early as this tomorrow (Wednesday 15th July) or possibly the following day. We cannot be certain that the announcement will be in line with the leak reported in the Sunday Times on 14th June, which you may have seen, but we are quietly confident that the Secretary of State will stand by her reported commitment to protect the under 18s from life-changing and irreversible decisions and is very unlikely to proceed with self-identification as first mooted when the consultation was announced.
We are very keen to ensure that our Labour MPs do not resist the announcement for opposition’s sake, whenever it comes (and there is still a possibility it may not be until after the summer recess, which we seriously hope is not the case). We would like to encourage you, if you are not already, to be in touch with your MP, whatever their political persuasion, asking them to welcome the announcement, congratulate the government on adopting the Labour Manifesto commitment to the protection of single-sex spaces, the safeguarding of children and keeping the channels open for further debate that involves women. We are particularly keen to encourage cross party solutions to this and for it not to become a right left issue, either within the Labour Party itself or across the parliamentary parties either in London or Scotland (where, of course, the GRA is devolved).
As a working group, we are continuing to press for dialogue and debate and there are encouraging signs that the sands are shifting so although it can be difficult to keep fighting this fight, we urge you to stay strong. It can be a difficult position to take, but through our strength and unity, we can do this.
In solidarity and sisterhood.
The Labour Women’s Declaration Working Group
