Domestic violence, Camilla, a brave mother and grandmother and an evil, evil man

Last week on the Emma Barton show on Radio 5 Live, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, talked about her campaigning against domestic abuse. She spoke about the case that had inspired her to get involved. In 2010Joanna Simpson was bludgeoned to death by her estranged husband in front of their children.

After the show, Joanna's elderly mother, Diana Parkes, got in touch. This morning she was interviewed on the show. Please listen, it is one of the most moving things I've ever heard and Diana wants her daughter's story to be heard.

Joanna's killer, Robert Brown, was convicted of manslaughter and will be eligible for parole soon.

Thank you - this is what women's rights means to me.

I've seen people reacting to that - annoyingly, most of them are commenting on 'Jim' and his claim that 'many men are annually murdered by their partners' as part of DV.

I know the ONS figures etc. are always a little behind but I thought (as per this BBC item) that 75% of the victims are female? (Lack of hearing means I can't listen to the radio so I don't know how partial a view this is with people concentrating on 'Jim'.)

In England and Wales, between April 2014 and March 2017, around three-quarters of victims of domestic killings by a partner, ex-partner or family member were women, while suspects are predominantly male.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49459674

The number of women killed by a current or former partner has surged by nearly a third, fresh figures have revealed, as overall numbers of female victims of homicide hit a 14-year-high.

There were 80 women killed by a partner or ex in the year to March 2019, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, an increase of 27% from the previous year.

It's wretched to think that all of those previous record years for DV killings are likely to be broken by what's happened in lockdown.

How on Earth they found him guilty of manslaughter and not murder is beyond me. He obviously planned it.

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 13/07/2020 11:57

We often hear the gruesome statistic of 2/3 women murdered by a partner or ex-partner every week!

(It was mentioned only this morning on Woman's Hour.)

I have never heard the equivalent stat for men. Rare as hen's teeth I'd imagine.

Anyone? I'd like to able to quote it when people go on about men also being victims of DV..

The chart in this article shows that only 4% of male deaths are caused by partners or ex-partners - apologies for being rubbish at tech!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 13/07/2020 12:16

I have never heard the equivalent stat for men. Rare as hen's teeth I'd imagine.

As per the first item I linked, for the UK (slightly outdated) it must be approx. 30 a year die in the context of domestic violence but not all of those killers will be female as there are distinctions between domestic violence and intimate partner violence plus the added complication of elder abuse/violence?

NB: this says 30 men p.a..

www.lwa.org.uk/understanding-abuse/statistics.htm

As an add-on to the DV-related deaths for women, there's thought to be an additional 2 female suicides a week that are related to IPV or similar - I've no idea what the comparable numbers would be for men but given the comparative rarity of female suicide that feels like a lot.

ShinyFootball · 13/07/2020 12:17

As an aside I'm really pleased to see more and more high profile women supporting and speaking out about issues that are women specific.

This feels like a real change over the last 5 years or so.

RHTawneyonabus · 13/07/2020 12:20

How the hell did ten of the jurors think it wasn’t murder?! He dug a hole months before and his a hammer in his kids bags.

What do women have to do to be believed?

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 13/07/2020 12:37

How the hell did ten of the jurors think it wasn’t murder?!

Presumably, listening to the evidence, 5 out of 6 people/jurors would have made the same decision. I always have to tell myself that I wasn't on the jury, weighing up the evidence with which they were presented. The psychiatrist/psychologist making the case for a rare, shortlived, extreme version of adjustment disorder must have been deeply charismatic and persuasive.

I thought the judge's sentencing remarks were very strong and clearly showed his interpretation of the evidence.

Collidascope · 13/07/2020 12:43

Info on male victims of DV.

It really is worth listening to the interview if you have time. I can't remember the last time I listened to anything so powerful.

Emma Barton is excellent and Camilla (right at the beginning) also very good, she really cares about this.

If anybody says "What about the men?" in regards to domestic violence, always refer them here:

Missillusioned · 13/07/2020 14:35

The male victims of fatal domestic violence are usually killed by other men. For example a man killed alongside his girlfriend or daughter by the ex partner of the girlfriend or daughter will be counted as domestic violence murders.

Thelnebriati · 13/07/2020 14:57

When looking at the statistics its important to remember that if a woman defends herself and her abuser makes a complaint, the police record her actions as an instance of abuse, not as self defense.
