That does not surprise me in the slightest

CoffeeTeaChocolate · 09/07/2020 11:09

It all makes kind of sense, doesn’t it?!

Yes, not a surprise here!

Goosefoot · 09/07/2020 11:13

Explains a lot.

So really, if this research is correct, it shows that the people screaming transphobe & cancelling JKR are - in fact - judging her by their own standards.

People who publish details of their abuse for victimhood points (as outlined in the study) will not understand a woman who has (I think) gone against her own very private instincts to give context to her current stance. I'm sure she understands this.

She is brave.

SuckingDieselFella · 09/07/2020 12:08

Very interesting, thanks for posting.

New research finds that water is wet.

Kantastic · 09/07/2020 12:31

It's interesting. It gives me a new perspective on the values of stoicism and stiff upper lip and whatever - I always thought of those as individualised virtues that reduce individual suffering when practiced correctly. I never thought about the social-fabric level - that stigma on expressing victimisation reduces grifting opportunities.

It makes me wonder how it is possible to destigmatise the open acknowledgement of pain and suffering without creating this current situation where people gain status from performative suffering. It's actual victims who are getting the shaft, either way.

Antibles · 09/07/2020 15:02

No surprise at all. Not just the virtue signalling but the victim signalling. As Martha Stout says about sociopaths: "Beware the pity play". They play massively on the goodwill and sympathy of people with a conscience.

I think some are also playing massively at the moment on the desire of good people not to be tarred with the "-phobe" brush.

nauticant · 09/07/2020 15:13

One thing that's been apparent for ages is that in this time of identity politics how shockingly verbally aggressive people tend to be when they're suppressing contrary views.

It's obvious that behaving in that way is very attractive to abusers.

Antibles · 09/07/2020 15:28

Oh yes nauticant. It's a lighning rod to those who want to scream abuse at women and our responses are endless narcissistic supply.

Doyoumind · 09/07/2020 19:00

It's my narcissistic ex all over and I see so much of him in other people on the internet.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 19:05

As Martha Stout says about sociopaths: "Beware the pity play". They play massively on the goodwill and sympathy of people with a conscience.

We see this here all the time and it's so frustrating watching women who want to be kind fall for it. Pay particular attention to the rapid pivot from "pity me" to "fuck you you evil bitch" when you fail to comply in the way the person demanding pity was hoping for, it's illuminating.

Antibles · 09/07/2020 21:46

Yes. Fits with the general sound advice to women to pay attention to how a man reacts when they say 'no' to him.

Sorry your ex was like that, doyoumind.

TehBewilderness · 09/07/2020 21:52

Donald Trump has been giving a master class on the world view of the malignant narcissist.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 09/07/2020 22:29

DARVO. It's a well-known tactic. No surprise here either.

Binterested · 09/07/2020 22:53

This is Jameela Jamil syndrome basically. I guess it’s especially to be found among high profile show biz people who might perhaps tend to the narcissistic end of the spectrum. Not All Actors Are Like That obviously Grin. But it’s a recognisable character type.

The link doesn't work.
