So under Teresa may self id. Now it looks like it's being scrapped. I didn't vote last year. Always felt very strongly about voting. Just couldn't bring myself to vote Labour with their treatment of women. Not that I'm keen on the tories either. However, out the two I couldn't see Labour scrapping it. Feel like it's the Tory party that's the better of the two evils when listening to women's concerns

I'm about to join the SDP but... I'm currently in Twitter conversation with someone from the party who denies white privilege. Another doesn't feel the need to monitor sex equality. If they are all like that, they are more Tory than the tories.

Bananabixfloof · 08/07/2020 21:26

I'll hold my nose, vote something vaguely tenable in general terms as one does and will be lobbying the hell out of these people regarding issues on which I disagree with the platform

In normal times I vote whichever way suits me. And a general adherence to roughly my values is ok with me.

But times are different right now, and I believe women matter more at this point than anything else. Once we lose our definitions we lose ourselves.

I would vote for a donkey if the donkey was going to keep tween and teen girls safe from having to share changing rooms at the pool with adult heterosexual males. This is a unique challenge to women's rights, and it will remain my priority until that challenge has been overcome.

ListeningQuietly · 08/07/2020 21:50

Prodigal
You are falling into their trap
as per the threads on this board tracking the history of the Trans issue

the right wing WANT YOU to hate all other left wingers
and once they are in power they will shit on everybody
your enemy's enemy is not necessarily your friend

yes, they will make changing rooms safe
but they will bollocks up employment rights
maternity rights
health insurance and contraceptive rights
while you are looking the other way
be careful

TeaAndStrumpets · 08/07/2020 21:51

highame another old lady here, almost your age. Labour was like a religion in our family, but no more.

Basically I don't give a shit about the Labour Party these days, and if disobliging them means voting Conservative I will do it.

Labour have had my vote for half a century, but their attitude to women and children is despicable. This worm has turned Grin

This. We will not get these rights back for decades, if at all, if we lose this fight. All political parties are flawed, but refusing to engage with them is futile. I am full of admiration for the women who are party members, or who have recently joined parties, in an effort to effect change from within. It may seem hopeless, but doing nothing is not an option for me, nor for many other women. If you have the time, and the inclination, join up and get stuck in. Find your closest fit, you will never find a party with whom you are in complete agreement. For me, the rights of women, and of girls, are paramount.
TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/07/2020 21:55

I don't hate all other left wingers. I am a left winger, but won't vote for any party that's pushing self ID and the whole package of dangerous nonsense. Right now this issue is my top priority. Once it's been resolved then my priorities will shift again.

Don't condescend to people. We're not stupid.

ListeningQuietly · 08/07/2020 21:58

Prodigal
I would never say that you are stupid
but voting is a balance of lots of issues
and I am cynical about the blerdy lot of them
and feel utterly betrayed by most of them
(Brexit, women's rights and climate change)

Baroness my closest political match is the LibDems, have voted for them my entire voting life, leafleted for them, had signs in our front window - members of my husband's family are (now ex) lib dem MPs and he worked for them too for a bit. They cancelled my membership in 2019 when I wrote in to ask if Baroness Featherstone's article in February last year saying I wasn't a feminist and wasn't welcome in the party was official Lib Dem policy. Literally got an email back cancelling my membership and my direct debit.

So...I tried!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/07/2020 22:14

None of the major parties will ever put women's rights first. We are, sadly, going to have to hold their feet to the fire each and every time.

Looks like Labour are continuing down that path too, or at least some members are trying to force them to, given the current fuss about the car show guy (as mentioned in another thread I don't give a shit about cars so have no idea how unpleasant he may generally be) stating support for Labour and Starmer acknowledging him. Apparently he was meant to respond with "fuck off, we don't want your support"? Seems like an odd way to win elections to me but hey ho.

christinarossetti19 · 08/07/2020 22:46

I'm not sure that the Tory's had to do much to attract people from the left tbh.

The left has done such a good job of eating itself, that they haven't really needed to.

ShinyFootball · 09/07/2020 01:03

When even is the next election.

I am aware that some people like to screen shot to show that people on this site are right wing loons etc.

Next election is due 2024.

Dont think I care if someone assumes I'm a right wing loon. Or a left wing loon, or just a plain old loon.
Left, right or determinedly centre doesn't change biology.

LockdownLump · 09/07/2020 07:43

The TU Movement is still anti women and only ever goes for token gestures

Very much agree. The movement is stuck in the 70's and whilst I would encourage anyone worker to be in a TU, still be aware that it is an institutionally, running through its' bones, sexist organisation.

I have joined the SDP. I was politically homeless. Their new incarnation seems to be saying all the right things.

Willing to see what unfolds.

I agree. I’m sure there are plenty of tories laughing their arses off right now as the other two parties handed potential voters to them in a plate.

What upset me with labour is that it just wasn’t up for discussion. Women MPs telling me I was transphobic and I wasn’t welcome in the party. They closed the door on me. How can I vote for a party that doesn’t want women like me? The conversation was not up for discussion. Tow the line or get out.

My daughters safety and well-being is the most important thing in my life. I don’t want her thinking it’s normal that men can be around her whilst she is undressed. Or that if she is having her first nerve racking smear it’s done by male and there is nothing she can do about it ( and she could be sued or accused of discrimination for objecting to it) or that when she is in school they reach her lies and force her to accept unscientific truths.

I have to align with the party that is willing to protect them. No other party is offering to do that.
