Did anyone else notice and point out this? I couldn't find anything on this board.

twitter.com/wagamama_uk/status/1278945905631203329

this pride season, we’re sharing our virtual space to support
@Genderintell + @ExistLoudlyUK
. two organisations doing incredibly important work in the lgbtqia+ community

A lot of stuff about 'safe spaces' and 'share your space'.
They're already getting some grief on Twitter, but I do wonder whether it's gone under the radar a bit with everything else kicking off right now!

Also, what's 'Pride season' - I thought it was June?!

I am getting beyond hacked off with all this capitalist companies who existing purely to create profit for the already wealth hectoring me about a moral agenda. Companies should have inclusion and diversity stuff internally for the benefit of staff and culture. They have no fucking business projecting that outwards.

Evelefteden · 05/07/2020 16:41

It’s all just advertising tactics. I struggle to believe senior management in these big places actually give a shit. They know it’s causing controversy.

Also millennials are their biggest staff and customer base. Surprised it took them this long really.

But we won’t be going back now.

I do wonder if this is happening in the Dubai Mall one. That would be interesting!

SerenityNowwwww · 05/07/2020 16:50

I know someone who works in a very wokey organisation. He says that they would endorse kitten drowning if there was brownie points in it for them.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 05/07/2020 16:56

Older people see the cynicism in a way younger people don't. The question is always the extent to which that will impact the bottom line, which will depend on what the customer base is like.

itsor · 05/07/2020 16:56

I liked their vegan options, but I've read through the resources by Gendered 'Intelligence' and it's unscientific and sometimes dangerous propaganda. I can't support it, so that's it for Wagamama.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 05/07/2020 17:14

"Gendered Intelligence" just sounds like standard "boys are better at math than girls" sexism. Always found it interesting that they chose that name.

Needmoresleep · 06/07/2020 08:05

I’m saving lots of money.

I liked Wagamama.

I’m not sure I can manage full boycotts of Amazon, John Lewis, Tesco, M&S etc, but I have my list of places that don’t value me as a customer, and I look for alternative suppliers where possible.

I can manage a boycott of Wagamama. Best alternative in my experience is to look at Trip Advisor and find local places which are well reviewed.

Bearsinmotion · 06/07/2020 09:55

That’s a shame, I haven’t been to Wagamama since the kids were born, I was hoping to introduce myself to it in the summer holidays Sad

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/07/2020 10:46

Sally872
If there are men so dangerous they could harm a grown woman

IF?????

How many women murdered by men per week does it take to convince people that there are indeed men out there who can harm a grown woman?

How many rapes of women by men per year?

Buy a decent rice cooker (yumasia.co.uk have a good selection) and download their free recipes off their site. I have one of their old cookbooks and have been working through it during lockdown. Their food is very easy to reproduce at home with ingredients you can buy in the supermarket or a Chinese/asian grocery shop. You can also buy big bags of gyoza in most Chinese supermarkets for the same price as a Wagas side dish. Like many things, COVID has stripped away the magic & made us realise we can do it just as well at home.
SerenityNowwwww · 06/07/2020 11:20

I actually have a Wagamama cookery book when it first came out. I have the recipes mwahaha

JKRismyhero · 06/07/2020 12:55

Years ago someone bought me a Wagamama cook book. I'll never ever go to their restaurants again

Needmoresleep · 06/07/2020 13:08

Unfortunately I mainly go there when I am away from home and am looking for somewhere to eat and to kill time. Pizza Express became too greasy, and their service was too variable, and I have gone off Nandos.

Interesting that these firms are deciding that people like me are not part of their target market. This is the first time we have had real disposable income (kids have left home, mortgage is paid off) and I am running out of places to go.

cremuel · 06/07/2020 13:18

It just seems so odd to me. Normally companies are desperate to avoid anything controversial that might put off some of their customers. It’s so easy to not endorse trans organisations with dodgy attitudes to safeguarding- why would you just not do it? I highly doubt Wagamama cares one way or the other - this is about promotion. But what is the motivation in promoting yourself in such a controversial way - it just doesn’t make marketing sense.

This is it, if they chose a cancer charity or guide dogs for the blind or some such then no one would bat an eye, even better would be if they sponsored a local charity or sports club or something but realistically how much money do trans kids charities need? If GIDS are getting fewer than 3,000 referrals per year?
SerenityNowwwww · 06/07/2020 13:43

The dogs are cuddly I suppose - but they love all the imagery (sparkles, rainbows, cute little kids). It’s very superficial - I can’t see them giving money to FGM charities - bleeding children isn’t so cute huh?

NotAGirl · 06/07/2020 13:49

That's a shame I've been a customer since they opened their first restaurant around the corner from the British Museum. Right now if they have money to spare I'd prefer they pay staff who have not been able to work for a while.

What thread were you posting on? I’m curious now.

lionheart · 13/07/2020 16:32

Please forgive if this is a hijack but I just came on to post something similar about the Co-op. It's Pride celebrations shows their supprort for The Proud Trust--with links the Gendered Intelligence.

www.theproudtrust.org/

I know The Proud Trust has been discussed on here before:

lionheart · 13/07/2020 16:38

That blurring of the idea of a 'safe space' (which is problematic in its own way) and an entitlement to preferred physical spaces is something.

Binterested · 13/07/2020 16:40

Are they private equity owned ? Many PE houses have signed up to the UNPRI - responsible investing basically. They need to tick a box on diversity and something like this would tick that box while actually being incredibly negative for women.
