Apologies if this has already been talked about.

Started watching this with dd. All good. Covered diabetes, bullying, tolerance, different family types, standing up for yourself. Very positive.

Then they introduced a very young trans child. I'm rubbish at ages, but would guess 5-7 yrs. Biologically male, identifies as a girl. Referred to as a girl by parents. Taken to hospital for a fever. Uncomfortable by Dr and nurse referring to biology so babysitter (young girl) takes them outside to lecture them that child is in fact a girl and they should stop being unkind. Everyone agrees and praises girl for sticking up for younger "girl".

Ffs is this what we're teaching our kids. That biological sex does not matter and you can choose to be whatever you want with no questioning or safeguarding. Whatever happened to watchful waiting.

Thanks for the heads up about this as I know my dd will want to watch it. Luckily we have had many chats about biology, but still.....
It's that indoctrinate them while they are young aspect that is just so sinister.

Found this interview with the creators: www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/07/baby-sitters-club-netflix-interview

"Do you think if the show continues, the characters will age—unlike in the books?"
Shukert: Well, it depends how long it goes. [laughs]
Aniello: We’ve put them on growth suppressants. [laughs]

An amazing lack of joining the dots there.

Good to know.
My tweens have just started watching it.
From memory the themes were embracing your own talents and learning to deal with your problems, friendship and family, and squee crushes!!
Didnt realise it's now a propaganda vehicle.

It reminds me of the cabbage patch and stork myths that adults taught children of my generation that resulted in girls having no idea how they fell pregnant.

Violetlilac · 04/07/2020 01:40

This is so disappointing!! I loved the books when I was younger as they really covered being comfortable in your own skin no matter your differences and showed a wide range of ways to be a girl. There was no trans characters.

IdblowJonSnow · 04/07/2020 01:58

Well it's an opinion no? Isnt it only brainwashing if kids hear that everywhere? But maybe they are... there does seem to be a recent swing in that direction.

The Guardian calls it "good, old-fashioned fun"... where a normal, healthy child is told he was born in the wrong body based on sexist stereotypes. Instead of just letting him be himself, he has to change who he is because he likes things that are stereotypically for girls.

GOOD OLD-FASHIONED, FUN!!

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 04/07/2020 05:24

Wow this is awful. I had a ssumed my child coild watch any age alppopiate tv without me there. We has to undo the "born in the wrong body" myth after the cbbc one!

CourtneyLurve · 04/07/2020 05:49

Don't forget to downvote the series in Netflix.

EdgeOfACoin · 04/07/2020 06:40

That's a real shame. The whole point about the books was that there was a range of characters to identity with.

Kristy was the tomboy and the ringleader but there was never any hint that she was anything but a girl!
