NSPCC - alternative charities?

I have given a monthly donation to the NSPCC since I started work 30 years ago, but in light of their recent policies I can no longer support them. Are there any other UK based children’s charities that my money would be better used by?

Personally, I think Women's Aid is a good choice because if you rescue women, you will probably be rescuing their children too.

I really, really hope nobody is going to come along and tell me that they include men now or I will have a breakdown.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2020 16:13

I. Second womens aid or look out for s local children s charity like homestart.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 30/06/2020 16:14

The Children's Society supports young victims of CSE, young carers and runaways.

Sorry if it’s already been covered on MN and I missed it, but can someone tell me what NSPCC have done wrong. (I have a monthly donation too - mostly to support child line.) Thank you.

Ninkanink · 30/06/2020 17:27

Women’s aid considers men who identify as women to be women.

Ninkanink · 30/06/2020 17:29

(As far as I’m aware! But hopefully someone can come along and correct me if I happen to be wrong.)

Nia is a female only charity run by Karen Ingala Smith.

Pixilicious · 30/06/2020 18:09

Thanks all, some good suggestions for me to look in to

Women's Aid are now mixed sex, some shelters are no longer open to women with children at all.

Rape Crisis usually have single sex sessions.
Nia.
Southall Black Sisters.
Centre for Womens Justice

If you sell on Ebay you can set up a charity donation, and Nia and CWJ are two of the womens charities you can donate to.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2020 18:53

Nspcc support the mermaids charity.

gardenbird48 · 30/06/2020 18:58

JK Rowling and Baroness Nicholson's charity Lumos is for children I think (and it would be quite a nice signal of support for their stance)

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2020 19:01

Which I'm only assuming is the op objection to their politics.

wowfudge · 30/06/2020 19:04

What about Childlike?

wowfudge · 30/06/2020 19:05

Childline even

Rainb0wDrops · 30/06/2020 19:11

I give a monthly donation to my local children's hospice.

Used to do NSPCC but stopped after they kept hounding me to increase my donation (I was at uni at the time and had very little spare cash). They were very aggressive with their tactics and put me off them ever since.

fudgefan · 30/06/2020 19:15

The Victoria Climbie Foundation quietly carries on with protecting children after the NSPCC failed to protect Victoria and falsified records to cover up their inaction.

I stopped supporting the NSPCC years ago as they are rotten to the core and only interested in filling their coffers through campaigns that lack any credible evidence base.

That they should support Mermaids is hardly a surprise and another reason to support charities who understand the meaning of safeguarding.

UncleShady · 30/06/2020 19:18

The NSPCC thought everyone was being homophobic and nasty for complaining about one of their employees wanking in fetish gear at work and posting the pictures online. Wasn't he something to do with safeguarding as well? Eventually sacked but no apology.

Muttonindistress · 30/06/2020 19:19

Thank you MrsJayy.
Wowfudge - Childline are part of NSPCC.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2020 19:36

Oh a friend of mine told me about Luminous I forgot all about it.

Action for Young Carers

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2020 19:38

Lumos* sorry, it is an international charity so maybe you are looking for something closer to home.

wejammin · 30/06/2020 20:06

Slight tangent but just to confirm that WAFE - Women's aid federation England - are a bit wooly on defining what a woman is, but your local women's aid charity may be firmly GC.

totallyyesno · 30/06/2020 20:16

I would suggest Lumos or a local charity.

totallyyesno · 30/06/2020 20:19

Or not local but working to give refugee children an education : www.stillirisengo.org/en/
