Actually, quite impressed with the reply from my MP - who is a young tory woman:

'Thank you for contacting me regarding the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).

I understand your concerns about how this may affect transgender rights and I want to assure you that I will pass these onto my colleagues in the Government Equalities Office. This is a complex and sensitive area to reform and believe it is important that the Government strikes the right balance between trans rights and the right of natal-women.

Like many of my colleagues across the House, I am absolutely committed to protecting women’s rights and freedoms. I completely understand that reforming the GRA is a sensitive issue, which is why it is important for everyone’s views to be heard and listened to in an open and transparent debate.

I know that many people also have concerns about the impact of this legislation on children. I believe strongly that everyone should have the freedom to live their life in a manner of their choosing, but I do think it is very important we protect young adults, who are still developing , in their decision making process from taking action which they potentially cannot reverse.

I would like to assure you that I am committed to transgender equality and this continues to be something that I will follow closely in Parliament.'

I did write to her saying that I was glad the GRA changes had been postponed ;the toxic nature of the debate was unacceptable, and needed to be more transparent, that women's spaces should be protected and I mentioned sport in particular, and that the agenda was harmful to children.... She seems to have addressed my points....

Tbh I hate all this " sensitive issue - I'm going to pretend I care about women" stuff

It's all actually quite simple. You either wish to protect women and children or you dont. I often feel very resentful that they can get out of answering questions by pretending they are trying to consider everyone.

End of the day women should not be made to pay with their privacy or their safety or their dignity because men cannot deal with non conforming men.

Will someone, just once , answer bloody question

There's another thread that was about writing to MPs and your response is the same as other Tory MPs:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3940451-WRITE-TO-YOUR-MP?pg=7

eg "I am absolutely committed to protecting women's rights and freedoms. Reforming the GRA is a complex and sensitive issue, which is why it is important for everyone's views to be heard and listened to. I hope you will be assured by the Minister for Women and Equalities who has recently said that any reforms will ensure the protection of single-sex spaces. This, I feel, is extremely important."

Dicotyledon · 29/06/2020 14:51

Better than my MP who responded to my concerns with a long letter about how wonderful it was that women’s spaces are being given to men on the basis of their say so.

SarahTancredi · 29/06/2020 14:56

I've written 3 times and never received a reply . I have taken that to mean that they both dont think women are important which in a way is easier to live with than having received a lie which is meaningless when they work from a twaw basis and still see single sex spaces as single sex spaces even when members of the opposite sex are in it.
Cowards.

RoyalCorgi · 29/06/2020 14:57

I think they've been given text to copy and paste. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. It suggests the Tory party have got a single line on this and aren't letting their backbenchers go off-piste.

Zoikes · 29/06/2020 15:00

None of it means anything unless the politician's definition of woman agrees with yours though.

skql · 29/06/2020 15:22

happy for having some mp not shouting how hateful terf

VickyEadieofThigh · 29/06/2020 16:04

I've had much the same from my Tory MP, although he hasn't replied to my most recent email to him (he's usually very good in replying quickly - he may, however, be sick to the back teeth of emails from me, especially on this issue).

nauticant · 29/06/2020 17:00

I've had much the same from my Tory MP. They're working from a common template. This meant I got a same-day reply. Still, it shows there's awareness in the government and in individual MPs that there's a conflict of rights and that following the "easy" route outlined a few years back is not a great idea.

Chrestomanci3 · 29/06/2020 18:10

Not sure I agree they are all working from the same template. I wrote to Liz Truss (no response so far) and my MP (male, Tory). I wrote in support of single sex spaces. From him, I got the usual trans people are the most marginalised section of society. No mention of upholding single-sex spaces, just how dreadful everything is for trans people (I did not mention trans in my email). That's about the fourth time I've contacted him about similar concerns but he is not listening. In this area, his seat is safe.

northstars · 29/06/2020 18:17

I would’ve been pleased with this response. My Labour MP replied saying she fully supports trans rights. Didn’t mention women even once, even though that’s what my whole email was about. I am feeling very disheartened and politically homeless.

rabbitwoman · 29/06/2020 18:46

You see, I am mostly pleased that she has acknowledged the need to protect children, and acknowledged the need for a transparent and fair debate. That definitely feels like progress.....

I wrote to my male Labour MP recently with a really personal letter and he hasn't bothered to reply. Not that he could, other than to parrot TWAW.

hypernormal · 29/06/2020 19:07

Name and shame, then when they Google themselves they'll find this thread.
