Desperately sad piece from the independant here, after another stillborn baby, is born in prison.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/styal-prison-stillborn-baby-female-inmates-healthcare-pregnancy-birth-a9578861.html?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1592825172

A Nuffield report published this year highlighted a dangerous "last minute" approach to healthcare for pregnant prisoners, saying that more than one in 10 pregnant inmates gave birth either in prison or on their way to hospital

Another example of how our misongynistic society really really hates women.

Those poor, poor women.

Appalling. It seems no time since the last one. How do the poor women ever come back from that?

CaraDune · 22/06/2020 15:33

This keeps happening. Aren't there any politicians prepared to press for an inquiry into this? It's shocking and utterly unacceptable in a supposedly civilised society.

twoHopes · 22/06/2020 15:52

I'm trying to find any politicians or organisations tweeting about this but can't really find any. What can we do about this? All I can think of is to email my MP or maybe another senior female politician who might want to wield some influence? Maybe someone like Jess Phillips?

This can't go on - it's just horrific.

SarahTancredi · 22/06/2020 15:55

That's just awful.

Prison is the punishment. It's not for staff to decide that they should add to it. And by law everyone whether a saint or an axe murderer is entitled to equal medical treatment.

BillyCotton · 22/06/2020 16:03

This is inhumane.

As someone who has had rapid deliveries this 'last minute' business is the stuff of nightmares but even where there is more time or no knowledge of pregnancy like this latest case, that is the chance to do something that will keep everyone safe and babies alive.

Frozenfrogs86 · 22/06/2020 16:12

Appalling. You wouldn’t think it would be so hard to ensure women are given proper treatment. They should have a dedicated midwife who comes as soon as labour starts and they make the decision when to go to hospital. Prison guards are not medically trained and should have no part in deciding when to transfer or seek medical help. Women should also be able to contact their midwife at any time for advice and midwives advice should be followed.

ShinyFootball · 22/06/2020 16:14

That's horrific.

The points about women being denied prescribed meds eg hrt, antidepressants is awful too.

That's a good point Frozen. There needs to be much better access to midwives, something like a partnership arrangement with the local community team and rapid transfer to hospital when necessary.

It's many years ago now, but I did my student nurse training in a hospital that was close to a prison and a YOP. I remember prison officers reluctance to believe male prisoners who were unwell / injured, perhaps because of experience, but I do remember one muppet telling (or trying to tell) me that he needed to be present during surgery under GA in case the prisoner was faking it.

I appreciate it must be a difficult environment and not every woman will be a model prisoner. Pregnant women are rarely a physical threat to anyone except themselves though, and to treat women in labour so badly is inhumane.

It's utterly inhumane.

Apart from contacting our MPs and Ministers, what else can we do to help?

Bananabixfloof · 22/06/2020 16:33

So is there a record of just how many pregnant prisoners go through this?
Am assuming there must be and will Google later, until then my thoughts are can we bring some light to this situation and how. Emailing MPs is good and I will. Can the baroness Nicholson be informed when we have data?

I have had a stillborn baby and am horrified that prisoners have to unnecessarily go through this almost as more punishment.

Kit19 · 22/06/2020 16:37

This is horrendous!! Is it worth contacting the Prison Reform Trust?

Luzina · 22/06/2020 16:44

This is horrendous!! Is it worth contacting the Prison Reform Trust?

Definitely. The Howard League too

Bananabixfloof · 22/06/2020 16:51

Ok I've googled, but it's mostly pdfs. I dont have the time to trail through (always) massive pdfs and I dont have room on my device.
Could one of you pretty please do some digging. If we are armed with info we can email lots of people. I'm happy to email many many people.

OvaHere · 22/06/2020 17:26

I saw this yesterday. It's shocking that this keeps happening. There needs to better healthcare for pregnant prisoners than this.

twoHopes · 22/06/2020 18:02

I've found this statement from an organisation called Birth Companions who work with pregnant women in prison.

An extract:
"The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman must now conduct another full investigation, building on their inquiry into the Bronzefield case, the findings of which are yet to be shared. Both investigations should take account of the systemic risks prison custody poses to the health and safety of women and their babies, with findings made public as soon as possible. These should be responded to fully and urgently by the Ministry of Justice and Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service to ensure that this is the last baby that dies in our broken prison system.

This latest tragedy comes as the government’s own plans to release pregnant women in light of the pandemic prove ineffective, and the much-lauded Female Offender Strategy, emphasising alternatives to prison, remains a vision rather than a reality. This cannot go on. We demand an immediate end to the use of custody for women in all but the most exceptional of circumstances."

Sorry, messed up the link:

I'm thinking of using some of their language in an email to Lucy Frazer. What do others think?

ShinyFootball · 22/06/2020 18:52

The fact that pregnant women who are in massive pain indicating something going wrong are being left locked in with no help, medical assistance is appalling.

The second woman they did not know she was pregnant. She was left in massive pain locked in a cell until it was too late to save the baby.

These cases hit the news as the babies died. How many women with other medical problems, in pain, needing urgent medical attention are being left like this? And because there's no baby involved it never makes the papers.

Supergoggles · 22/06/2020 22:23

Heart breaking Flowers for them

Ninkanink · 23/06/2020 19:16

Oh god how utterly horrendous.

That’s just appalling and absolutely inhumane treatment.

OhHolyJesus · 23/06/2020 20:52

I saw this on FB and admit I couldn't read to the end. I scrolled saw the bit about given birth in handcuffs and had to stop reading. I couldn't imagine it. I can't understand why someone would do that.

I'm happy to write letters too if anyone can share something to crib from please DM me, I'd be grateful for a short cut as under pressure this week but also keen to write.
