We used to use this when DS was little. Sorry we don’t so that I could cancel it.

They do worksheets in topical/news events and get kids to discuss/think. This one on the recent JKR affair is mind boggling in its bias and utter nonsense. It’s written as if it is a generally agreed fact that she has written hateful comments and is on the wrong, plus this gem:

WORD WATCH
People who menstruate
Rowling implied that we used to call people who have periods “women”, which excludes trans women. In response, Daniel Radcliffe wrote: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.”Daniel Radcliffe Played Harry Potter

To be honest when I found out about Gill it made me feel sick. I don't know why it has stuck in my mind. I can't remember the exact date but I do remember reading something about him and Googling further on my phone. I can even remember which room I was in when I read it.

DidoLamenting · 21/06/2020 23:29

I think what upsets me about Gill is no one seems to care. It really wouldn't matter if the font ceased to be used - there are plenty of others and the Gill statue at the BBC should go. Hardly anyone seems to agree.

SerenityNowwwww · 21/06/2020 23:32

There are quite a lot around (and they are stunning).

Maybe it’s a combination of his work being genius and - I assume - his crimes weren’t made public until well after his death (and rumours wouldn’t have been believed as they were absolutely horrific and beyond belief to most people).

It's also occurred to me that the idiot who wrote about "Wagner’s Fifth Symphony" is clearly unaware of the one piece of Wagner which has entered into wide public knowledge- the wedding march from Lohengrin.

Is it still used much ? None of the weddings I've been at for a long time now have used the traditional Wagner or Mendelssohn marches but it's presumably still well known.

itsor · 27/06/2020 19:53

So what became of this? No apology or withdrawal of the content I assume?

SerenityNowwwww · 28/06/2020 09:49

No idea - can you see it without a sub?

That's a good apology. A bit late though, and after thousands (?) of children have read it and internalised that Rowling is a bigot who is trying to get trans people hurt and should probably be cancelled...

aliasundercover · 23/07/2020 09:25

That’s a good point itsor

Maybe they should do a lesson about people who are prepared to stand up and speak the truth in the face of hostility.

gardenbird48 · 23/07/2020 09:30

@Gingerkittykat

Others say, enough is enough. JK Rowling must understand that her words have consequences. Trans people are especially vulnerable to self-harm and suicide and it is simply unacceptable for her to use her fame in this way

They had to get a bit in about JK Rowling literally killing trans kids.

and The Day needs to understand that outright lies and defamatory accusations have consequences.
There is no good evidence that supports their basic point and absolutely no evidence that JK Rowling's fame and statements have anything to do with it.
SquirrelChaser · 23/07/2020 11:20

I think it’s an appalling apology. They reintegrate why Wagner and Picasso were used as comparators, which just reinforces the message in the original article. They are excusing themselves which makes any apology insincere. I hope she sues their arses.

SquirrelChaser · 23/07/2020 11:21

Reiterate not reintegrate 🙄

SerenityNowwwww · 23/07/2020 11:31

Its not really a napology. They have been made to say sorry. Someone cane up with he idea, wrote it and someone ok-ed it - so noone stopped it or tried to change the slant. Its all about the bottom line - will they lose sales and will the get their arses sued off?

Maybe that should be one of their work sheets? How about how labelling people can get you into Big Trouble, how pressure groups have wheedled themselves into mainstream, brainwashing, virtue signalling...

I love* this idea that speaking about biology is a hate crime but slander and libel are A-ok.

*if love means dislike.

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 23/07/2020 12:08

Maybe they can do an article about media bias?

The full apology is crap though. We said all those things and meant them but now we are back pedalling like mad and pretending that that's not what we meant, don't you know?

The least they should do is email all subscribers the apology so parents/teachers can have a discussion with the children about it all means.
