A speech blasting denial of importance of sex. Worth a watch.

@TerribleCustomerCervix

Fantastic.

What party does she belong to?

(Please please please make it be a lefty party!)

I wondered that too! According to my brief google, she's a member of the liberal party. I don't know enough about Australian politics to know anything about them though!
EmperorCovidula · 20/06/2020 17:38

@NoseringGirl they’re one of the two main parties (the more right wing of the two hence the name, the lefter one is called labour same as Britain). They currently hold power in federal government and have done since 2013.

Thats a great speech & a really useful one to share with people who are becoming aware as a result of the coverage due to J.K Rowling's statement and subsequent treatment.
Thank you Claire Chandler.

While she is a ‘Liberal’ party senator... the main two Australian parties (Liberal and Labor) are quite centralist in regards to their policies really. However, Tasmania is a state that has been outspoken in the past.

Either way. Fantastic to see.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/06/2020 20:18

Thank you for the context, Winesalot!

Good to see someone who is on the centre speaking out without being accused of being a right wing nutter

Oxyiz · 20/06/2020 21:37

Fuck me, she's amazing! Incredibly well said and yes so calm and assertive even knowing what will be thrown her way.

Was the chamber empty because of Covid?

Oxyiz · 20/06/2020 21:39

And she's damn right. We're supposed to live in democracies. If this were put to a vote it would be obliterated.

Melia100 · 20/06/2020 23:32

No Greens or Labor senator would speak out for women on this matter.

I live in dread of my (much loved by me) Labor MP speaking out against women on this issue. So far, she's not said anything.

The Liberal Party was once centrist. I'd call it neoliberal now. With a nasty flavor of Pentacostalism coming from the PM at the top.

I'm so sick of only ever having my interests in these matters defended by those I don't vote for! Happened with home education too - Greens wanted to abolish the right to home educate - Liberal MP did her research, met with the community (which here, is a lefty one!) and told the Greens where to get off! in a very measured, fact-informed way.

www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/spotlight-to-shine-on-gender-clinics/news-story/409acceb209beb2eb81cfbbf4927629f

'Children’s hospital gender clinics offering contentious hormone drugs for troubled teenagers who declare themselves “born in the wrong body” face an audit and review of their treatment approach.

The Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council, which brings together the top health officials across the nation and today discusses the gender clinic controversy for the first time, has requested states and territories to carry out the audit and review, and report back by July 17.'

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 24/06/2020 09:14

The Australian has been doing solid reporting in this space, and have been consistently critical of the lack of oversight for children and teenagers presenting for transition.

I’ve never been sure if that’s editorial ethics, or the Murdoch press sticking it up the Labor Party and the Greens.

BinkyandBunty · 24/06/2020 09:23

Nothing centrist about her or her party, she's a conservative with a good track record of voting for socially and environmentally destructive legislation:
