From Ben Hunte, of course: https:www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-53101071

Getting a bit worried that the backlash will force yet another U-turn.

I can't make that link work.

Thank you.

Yeah, so biased.

What would be wrong with saying: Mixed reactions? And then both sides of the debate. Or Controversial and again speaking to different groups?

And the way they talk about JKR - its always ANGER at transphobia. That her tweet got over 240, 000 likes is never mentioned-

Trust in the media is very low among some communities - this type of deliberate framing of debate doesn't help.

Helen Joyce has ripped it to shreds on Twitter

I've complained. Ben Hunte should not be paid as a journalist when he's actually an activist.

Good for her.

I really do think there are terrible long term implications for the press being so undermined - so when the BBC go and do shit like this, its really bad news not just re this debate but ALL debates.

nauticant · 19/06/2020 17:22

I'm not sure I agree completely with Helen Joyce. I think she is focusing on obtaining a GRC but doesn't include as part of her argument the issue of qualifying for "gender reassignment" according to the Equality Act 2010. If you read the BBC article carefully it vaguely talks about "any trans person who has transitioned to be recognised as their acquired gender".

Equality Act 2010:

7 Gender reassignment

(1) A person has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment if the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person's sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex.

This is so broad that someone thinking that they might have electrolysis at some future point could arguably be included.

Of course, the BBC shouldn't be publishing articles written by activists that are worded in such a slippery way that they are calculated to deceive.

GrandmaMazur · 19/06/2020 19:01

I've complained too - it's completely misleading

zanahoria · 19/06/2020 20:47

Did they even cover Women's Place events ?

Thelnebriati · 19/06/2020 23:07

I complained about bias and inaccuracy in a recent BBC article, and got a response that basically said 'we don't make the news we just report it and leave people to make their own minds up'.

Except if you only show one side, how are people supposed to do that?

nauticant · 19/06/2020 23:27

My first complaint to the BBC, about Evan Davies misrepresenting the result of a judicial review to belittle Harry Miller, turned, once it was escalated to the second level, into a mini-lecture about how I needed to understand what "Devil's Advocate" means.

I'd expect Helen Joyce's complaint to go a similar way. That there was an unfortunate "lost in translation" and although the article was not incorrect, perhaps it could have been ever so slightly more clear.

I'm still mulling over what to do about me being gaslighted by the BBC.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 20/06/2020 08:44

The article appears now to have been changed.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/06/2020 08:49

Currently, the Gender Recognition Act requires trans people to go through a long process in order to change their birth certificates

yeah they took out medical didnt they.

thats it though?

its so partisan, i cant believe its acceptable.

littlbrowndog · 20/06/2020 08:52

I complained to bbc about using assigned at birth on the news

They said they thought it was relevant in the news article 🤷‍♀️

UncleShady · 20/06/2020 09:13

What's the statistic about trans people in the general population - 0.05%? but the % of BBC employees who consider themselves trans is about 20% - someone else would need to verify the numbers as those are off the top of my head but it does explain the complete bias and inaccuracy in so much of their reporting on this.

And then of course you think of the BBC's treatment of Carrie Grace and Jenni Murray and indeed of all the women who have complained and been gaslighted and patted on the head...

nauticant · 20/06/2020 09:22

It's estimated that 0.5% of the UK population is trans. (There's no agreement on what trans means.)

Two per cent of BBC staff are transgender:
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/two-per-cent-of-bbc-staff-are-transgender-krb3bc7nd

Broadly 4 times over-represented.

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 20/06/2020 09:27

How do I complain? I don't see anything clickable on the actual article..

UncleShady · 20/06/2020 11:00

Ok so I was slightly out in my figures there.
