This is the text from the Sunday Times. Whilst the article was about a leaked plans I took this to mean that that the consultation responses were skewed and so it will not be viewed as a realistic 'taking the temperature' exercise on public view. MPs who respond with that that statistic need further questioning of its basis and whether they thought the consultation was well-advertised, fairly written and if prior to the release of the consultation had those writing the consultation met with women's groups? (You can complain about public consultations I believe through Better Refulation.)
"More than 100,000 responses were received to the consultation. Insiders say about 70% of those backed the idea that anyone should be able to declare that they are a woman or a man. However, officials believe the results were skewed by an avalanche of responses generated by trans rights groups."
No one can deny now the influence "trans rights groups" (notice they didn't write LGBT) have in government.
I suspect the government equalities office groups will be particularly aware and I look forward to the meeting minutes from the meetings that follow this announcement in July.
