As someone who has fairly recently left an abusive relationship I have found the reporting of the JKR situation very triggering.
Not just the Sun headline, which I understand broke press reporting guidelines. The fact that she got so much abuse on Twitter (some of it from journalists) and the fact that no one (or a tiny handful of people) challenged the horrible rape threats she was sent. Some of the journalists even seemed to be egging on people who were abusing her.
All abusers believe their victims deserve this. No one deserves to be sent rape threats. If I said that I disagree with something Priti Patel said and someone replied with she can suck my dick I would challenge them on that. I thought that anyone would. I use Priti Patel as an example because she get a lot of abuse, and even though I do not agree with her she has the right to live her life the same as anyone else.
I have been thinking a lot about the regulation of Twitter. In my work if we want to post on Twitter in a professional capacity we have to have social media training and agree to abide by a code of conduct. Does that not happen in journalism?
I wonder if the problem is a lack of guidelines or guidelines not followed.
