A reminder that the public know JK Rowling is right and that those wailing about having their childhood dreams destroyed or complaining that she's an evil transphobic are very much in the minority.

When the storm broke, I decided the time was right for me to read her Cormoran Strike books, so I sent off for them straight away.

TBF as much as I totally agree with everything JK has said- I hope it just proves that people believe in free speech rather than any opinion on her views.

We've had so many abusive male artists whose art has stood for itself and been defended.... But this woman, a victim herself, thought wrong.

SunsetBeetch · 15/06/2020 09:49

Same, Vicky.

And I bought The Tales of Needle The Bard the last time she was being attacked.

Twitter is not real life, and it's about time celebrities, companies and TRAs realised that.

I'm sure they're all just channelling Titania McGrath and ordering new copies so they can burn them.

Same here.

Vicky - I hope you enjoy them. I read quite a bit of crime, and I love the Cormoran Strike books - have just pre-ordered the new one coming out in the autumn. She is such a deft plotter, and very good on twists and turns, as we know from the Harry Potter books. One of the two main characters is in an abusive relationship and it's really interesting to look at that now in the light of her own revelations last week.

I bought the first strike book for my dad just before this kicked off

But got so pissed off on Saturday that i gave ds1 partner the money to buy the Harry potter box set

He was made up 😀

PurpleHoodie · 15/06/2020 10:21

I'll now be ordering a few books through her Lumos charity website, and also the Strike series.

Deliriumoftheendless · 15/06/2020 10:24

I would imagine there’s a lot of people bad mouthing JK Rowling publicly right now but privately still buying the books, the films, the other merch.

Tonz · 15/06/2020 10:29

I love the Harry Potter books and I always will. I read them to my children who can't wait to hear what happens next. JK Rowling is an amazing writer and no one can take that away from her

LonginesPrime · 15/06/2020 10:30

While I support JKR, I don't think her books remaining bestsellers suggests anything about the buyers' views on free speech or women's rights. It just shows how popular they were in the first place and that no amount of no-platforming is going to make more than a tiny dent in sales of such a robustly popular product.

PurpleHoodie · 15/06/2020 10:34

Could be.

What have been the overall bestselling top ten each week for the past 18 months?

SunsetBeetch · 15/06/2020 13:01

Yes, I agree. And that's great.

SunsetBeetch · 15/06/2020 13:05

Sorry, posted before I'd finished. TRAs absolutely think people should have their careers ruined if they hold certain points of view, it must pain them to see that they can't do this to JKR.

nevermorelenore · 15/06/2020 13:10

I actually bought my first Harry Potter book last week. I had been meaning to read it to my DS for a while and not got round to it, and seeing JK all over the news reminded me to buy it for him. Wasn't a political statement or anything, just good timing!

PenguindreamsofDraco · 15/06/2020 13:11

My Cormoran Strike books arrived Sat. I raced through the first one, it was bloody marvellous.

hoodathunkit · 15/06/2020 13:28

20(?) years ago I attended an anti-gang / anti-violence conference attended by community leaders, youth workers and concerned parents.

At various points in the proceedings an otherwise charming African lady (someone who I knew personally) shouted out to anyone who would listen that the reason for drugs, gangs and children misbehaving generally was the Harry Potter books. She claimed that they promoted witchcraft and the devil and would be the downfall of society.

Bless her heart, nobody took her seriously and people recognised that she was a vulnerable person (she was indeed very vulnerable and was under the influence of a nasty, rather cultic, pentacostal church).

I would never have thought that, going forward a couple of decades, I would find myself concerned about TRAs who promote an unscientific, fictional version of reality based on supernatural beliefs, and who attack and bully JKR because she does not join them in eroding women's rights and safeguarding and admiring the Emperor's beautiful, invisible clothing.

JKR has been the subject of bizarre claims from various quarters over the years, all claiming that she, or the Harry Potter books, will cause terrible damage to society.

It does seem ironic that in the past the claims were about her allegedly promoting supernatural beliefs and that now they are about her not promoting supernatural beliefs.

Sometimes you just can't win

HairyPotter · 15/06/2020 13:57

I’ve just ordered the first Strike now as well
