Hey up menstruators

Little fun activity for Saturday morning.
Do a search for 'women' on the Body Shop Website.

And...what was it Shon Faye said again? Oh yes. "Enjoy ur erasure"

I give The Body Shop till Xmas to go under.
I hope business undergrads use them as the classic case study in how to insult your customers and blow up your business during a global recession.

I no longer menstruate. Am I now a post menstruator?

DidoLamenting · 13/06/2020 12:29

Unfortunately he then went on to pontificate that it was be it was mainly products for women, they maybe felt that they didn’t need to actually mention women. FFS! Make blindness to female oppression, runs very deep within him

Oh fgs. Your son is right. Feminist blindness to just how ridiculous they can sound sometimes runs very deep too.

LillianBland · 13/06/2020 12:37

I’d be more convinced if they hadn’t just posted that snide comment to JK Rowling. A company that can’t recognise what a woman is, can not convince me that they have women’s interests at heart.

Floisme · 13/06/2020 12:37

Initial questioning and scepticism are how we make sure we get our facts right, and I think it's dangerous to equate them with 'making excuses'.

The point that the Body Shop sees women as their default customer seems like a fair one to me - it's precisely why their response to JK discussing violence against women was so tone deaf. Interested in any counter arguments though.

aliasundercover · 13/06/2020 12:55

Sorry @testing987654321, I was having some sort of brain freeze at that time. I reckon I’d have posted before you if I hadn’t had to spend 5 minutes trying to remember the word ‘default’ :)

ItsLateHumpty · 13/06/2020 13:15

...if I hadn’t had to spend 5 minutes trying to remember the word ‘default’‘

Oh god, I thought it was only me that did that!

Datun · 13/06/2020 13:23

As women are their default customer, what a shame they decided to mock one for being sexually assaulted.

And whereas it might be true that the word women should be a gimme on their website, that's not the stance they were taking. Why aren't they calling men 'people who use shaving cream'?

The reason is it's ludicrous. You can't possibly run a business or sell a service without a plural noun for the people you are targeting.

So why does that all change, when it's to do with women?

Is it fine to have a plural noun for, say clothing, but not if they actually depend on biology, like period pants?

What are the rules?

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 13/06/2020 13:26

I get that women are the default, so they wouldn't specifically use the word, or transwomen, for their products, but they also don't include transmen on their rage for non-females.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 13/06/2020 13:31

@LillianBland
I agree with your son too, in this case.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't for one minute have been surprised, but looking through the products show the "men" results are either totally unrelated items, or the few items the Bodyshop has that aren't assumed to be for females by default.

The problem is that any "menial" or provably baseless points we make just provide easy ammo and strawmen for people raking through everything we post.

It's why the trans argument is boiled down to toilets, and why "manspreading" gets a mention every time someone wants to talk about feminism being ridiculous or going to far.

LillianBland · 13/06/2020 13:42

Fair enough. I’ve probably over reacted. I got annoyed about it as a result of the crap they threw at JK. I also get very upset knowing that I have a son who is so pro men that he’ll happily ignore any risk to women, including his vulnerable sister. It’s so bloody frustrating how many men and young women don’t see the risks. The hypocrisy of the body shop to judge JK, yet quite happily include men, but not male bodied people who identify as trans, but still need shaving products, is laughable.

Gncq · 13/06/2020 13:45

Why aren't they calling men 'people who use shaving cream'?

While I can wave away the fact that "woman" returns no results on BS website, because the default customer is a woman and so there's no point putting "X for women" on any of their products, I too know what their position is on TWAW.

So it would be very tempting to orchestrate a campaign in the way TRAs have done to lingerie companies/period poverty charities, demanding they rename their products labelled "for men" like shaving cream and penis lotion or whatever, because some "women" (aka transwoman) need to use them too.

It would be fun to try, but I'm not a complete arse hole.

Gncq · 13/06/2020 13:49

^BS being Body Shop not Bull shit 😂

HermioneWeasley · 13/06/2020 13:51

They refuse to use the word women, so why do they use men? Why not ejaculators?

Gncq · 13/06/2020 13:52

Christ, I'm not calling Datun an arse hole either in case that's misinterpreted!

Just that is TRA tactics. Not mine!

LillianBland · 13/06/2020 13:55

Grin You wouldn’t dare!! Grin

DidoLamenting · 13/06/2020 13:55

That's some leap to make from the fact he made the correct analysis of the search results on The Body Shop website - an Olympic medal winning leap and then some.

I think you should take a long hard look at your own bias and prejudices.

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/06/2020 13:56

Don’t know if anyone has ever noted. On an iPhone if I put in male if will give the option Male with a capital M but if you put in female it remains in lower case.

I want to know why?

Don’t females deserve to have a capital letter

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/06/2020 13:57

Also hasn’t Body Shop gone under

LillianBland · 13/06/2020 14:02

I think you should take a long hard look at your own bias and prejudices.

I think you should take a look at reality.

Gimmecaffeine · 13/06/2020 14:05

Hmm It's because the default is women in The Body Shop. Most cosmetic products are like this, some men fear using a product that isn't 'for men' for ridiculous reasons.

Do you really want to see a mango body butter labelled 'for women'?

Datun · 13/06/2020 14:07

The thing is, transgender ideology would make a lot of capital out of the fact that women are the default for body shop, were it the other way round.

They would claim that women should not be the default, because some people need those products who aren't women.

Saying women, or not saying it because it's obvious, would be transphobic.

I feel sorry for your son. He disagreed with you, reasonably and correctly ,and you post this about him.

Gncq · 13/06/2020 14:07

Male with a capital M but if you put in female it remains in lower case I think it's because Male is a country in the Maldives, pronounced Marlay.

LillianBland · 13/06/2020 14:08

Oliversmumsarmy I believe that is because Male is also the name fir something else, but I can’t remember if it’s a town or something. I remember someone mentioning it on here.

Datun · 13/06/2020 14:09

olorsit

I believe it's because Male is a resort in the Maldives.
