So racism is going to be tackled in my company but sexism....

My company is all guns blazing this week about tackling racism (for the avoidance of doubt, I have no problem with this clearly racism has no place in the office or elsewhere) - company wide surveys, initiatives etc etc. However, for some reason every year when the gaping wide gender pay gap stats are published the company gives them a quick nod, emails out some platitudes about more women working part time/in junior positions, there is an outrageous lack of women at a senior level etc etc. Not to mention the women's network that has been taken over by men wanting to further their career by feigning an interest and charing the meetings!

I was just thinking almost exactly the same thing about my workplace.

Maybe you work for my employer Grin

For a minute I thought you were talking about my office but then I realised we don't have a women's network

Hold on tight because they will be on the “equity” bandwagon any minute.

Great some more whataboutery to take away from how serious the current issue is. Try being a woman of colour who is wanting to get a better salary Hmm

But I think that's exactly why we need to pair up the battles against racism and against sexism.

For women of colour, both racism & sexism are obstacles.

Yes that's where intersectionality comes in. I've always found it difficult to discuss my own issues in feminism groups as its very "white feminist" and the topic of race is seen as "other" so gets shut down. Now, race issues are finally getting the voice they have needed for so long and I've seen so many posters on Mumsnet moaning with their whataboutery. It's difficult

Your company is doing this because it is currently in the news. The platitudes you get every year about sexism that is not then later addressed is exactly what BAME people in your business are getting now.

Last year they "cared" about #metoo, if it's trending on Twitter they have to be seen to making an effort.

HermionesMom · 12/06/2020 16:13

It's like Netflix taking down racist films, last year they got rid of a few actors who'd fallen down in front of metoo. Are women making up 50% of speaking parts in movies now, not being expected to get their tits out? Nope.

And next year it will be the same for BAME people. We got rid of the bits that said "n*r" what more can you expect?
