That Andrew James Carter thread

It's been posted / sent to me twice, once by a woman who said I'm still learning about this stuff and this seems to have the opposite view. Once by a man who of course tried to condescendingly explain to me why Rowling is full of half truths and lies, and this is a "reasoned rebuttal".

I don't think I have the emotional energy for a point by point rebuttal. And I am annoyed that keyboard warriors who are copy pasting someone else's thread then keep insisting that we defend our thinking over and over again.

Has anyone read/written anything sensible in response to this thread? I'd love to read it / share it if possible.

I'm really puzzled by why so many men with no skin in this game - men who'd define themselves as cishet (barf) seem to be so invested in yelling at us. Like why do you care so much that trans women should be allowed free entry into our spaces? And that we should literally see no difference between us and trans women?

Does it not strike them as ridiculous to say transwomen fear for their lives in our spaces because we are such violent jerks so you MUST include them in your spaces for their safety since we can't hold back our violence?

Brew Sitting down re-reading that screenshot.

(Happy sigh)

bishopgiggles · 13/06/2020 10:21

merry - worth reading the Medium thread linked upscreen or the Maya docs.

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/06/2020 10:24

@OvaHere thanks for posting the Rhona Hotchkiss screen shot. Rhona is always so calm and patient about protecting vulnerable women in prison (and fiery when she needs to be 😅)

I read the medium thread - I'm not just familiar with the tribunal process - do they hear all cases regardless of the details?

bishopgiggles · 13/06/2020 10:44

merry - oh sorry, I shouldn't post in a rush!
I'm not sure. It looks like they will hear a case that has tried early conciliation through Acas, and can make a claim following certain conditions (like timeframe). CAB just says "If you have an adviser or representative, they will usually first decide whether you have a possible claim, whether you meet the conditions to make the claim and what evidence you have." So I guess it's dependent on the situation.

merrymouse · 13/06/2020 11:25

sorry - I posted in a rush too! I meant to say

"I'm just not familiar with the tribunal process"

thanks for the reply bishopgiggles.

“Racism isn't a Black people problem,” he said, “It's a White people problem that impacts Black people. And the same is true of transphobia. It's a cis people problem. Trans people shouldn't be expected to solve it. That's on us.”

From his piece..

No mention of how misogyny is a male person problem, that impacts female people. So his attempt to make out the males are actually worse off is..'interesting'

BatShite · 13/06/2020 17:51

From the forbes link, sorry..

Yes this is the most depressing bit about the whole thing. A lot of men enjoy having an excuse to shout at women, especially middle aged women. They like calling terf because it's an acceptable version of bitch/witch/cow. Ask any man on the GC side of the debate why these guys are so invested in yelling at us and they will tell you the same thing - it's misogyny.

AnyOldPrion · 13/06/2020 18:03

Is there an unroll of the thread anywhere? It’s so long that my aging iPad won’t even open it.

Notahandmaid · 13/06/2020 18:10

Not Finn Mackay.....

I always hoped she would be one of the first people to speak out against the ideology. I saw her speak at a conference years ago and her passion brought me to tears.

Her stance on all of this has been a huge disappointment.

severnboring · 13/06/2020 18:40

Fraid so notahandmaid... I know, I've heard her speak too, on sex trade abolition, and she was brilliant.

She seems to be defending some ideal version of trans activism (nobody is saying 'sex doesn't exist' etc) which doesn't actually exist, and is unwilling or unable to see the moutains of evidence for what is actually happening to women - actually happening in her city at that...

Notahandmaid · 13/06/2020 18:46

It's really sad @severnboring and I don't understand it. I thought she would be one of the first people to speak out in defence of women.

Oh well, another one falls off their pedestal.

merrymouse · 13/06/2020 19:50

These are the people I worry about if the law is changed.

"No actually I can follow that woman into the loo, how do you know I'm not non-binary?"

Marks and Spencer have already got a policy that allows men to do use any changing room they want.

It's such a massive gas lighting opportunity.

bishopgiggles · 19/06/2020 10:45

He's done parts 2 to 4 now ... will read at my leisure!

bishopgiggles · 19/06/2020 11:10

It really is an excellent piece, whether you've read the Carter thread or not - it really lays out the debate clearly, from whether or not 'rejecting the label cis' is transphobic or not, to the very incorrect invocation of the Equalities Act by Stonewall et al.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 19/06/2020 11:22

This one. It’s excellent. I don’t know when he sleeps though.

bishopgiggles · 19/06/2020 11:36

Is there a way of archiving Medium posts in case they're taken down? I have tried on Wayback machine but if I enter the URL it says "The requested URL was not found on the server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again."

@pencilsinspace may know...?

bishopgiggles · 19/06/2020 11:41

never mind, have used another archiving site.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 19/06/2020 11:57

The link works for me, but try this:

bishopgiggles · 19/06/2020 12:07

Yes, that's the post I'm talking about, as it was mentioned early on in the thread but he'd only done part 1 at the time.
My posts just now were about archiving them for posterity.

nauticant · 19/06/2020 12:12

Wayback Machine is the Internet archive that is likely to continue in operation in the long term but like you bishopgiggles I find it often will not archive the page.

bishopgiggles · 19/06/2020 12:14

I think it's due to Medium
