Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So if Netflix and HBO also removed anything sexist or misogynist, what would that look like?

What would the streaming services need to remove? There would be nothing left!

I'll start: all of James Bond up till about 10 years ago.

Pretty Woman (obviously)

All the older Disney princess movies

I think Dirty Dancing is a feminist film! Strong female character with her own narrative arc, abortion storyline which shows the double standards for women.

Yeah, I don't get the hate for Dirty Dancing.

Saucery · 11/06/2020 19:31

Mind Hunter would have to go.

Sneaky Pete and Breaking Bad would be able to stay.

Pugdoglife · 11/06/2020 19:34

I'm sure it's not on there but surely Rita, Sue and Bob too (I know it's cult and people love it) isn't appropriate today?

isabellerossignol · 11/06/2020 19:37

What's wrong with Mindhunter? The most knowledgeable, most educated character is female and she has a story in her own right.

stella47 · 11/06/2020 19:38

I'd start with "womanface" shows such as Drag Race and Mrs Brown's Boys. Are there others?

Saucery · 11/06/2020 19:42

Apart from Agent Dunham I found it a bit ‘Male gaze’ a lot of the time. Serial killers (of women) as celebrities.
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/06/2020 19:44

Basically every Hollywood film ever made - young gorgeous woman in love with old grumpy man.

Every TV series ever, males portrayed as combinations of witty, clever, handsome, important and powerful while women are reduced to basic caricatures of a single quality - hippy/clever/pretty/funny/fat

howsicklyarsekissy · 11/06/2020 19:49

365 on Netflix now!! is horrendous I can't believe it's got away with being released. Its trying to be a polish 50 shades of Grey, but imagine The male lead character basically sexually assaulting the female lead & then being violent to her until
she "falls in love with him" it's awful & totally misogynistic.

howsicklyarsekissy · 11/06/2020 19:49

& nothing wrong with mindhunters.

nevermorelenore · 11/06/2020 19:53

@ShinyFootball

Very little.

OTOH we've been watching the original Addams family series as a family thing and it is awesome Grin the kids (8&10) love it and surprisingly little to get twitchy about in the portrayal of women Grin

Most stuff I just can't watch now especially out of USA Sad

I love the Addams Family because it shows such a positive portrayal of marriage! So many sitcoms are a slovenly husband and miserable shrew of a wife. Gomez loves his wife so much and it's adorable.

I hate this.

And the classic 'old Hollywood' films are among the worst offenders. Often we don't notice it as women those days often looked mature for their age, but they often feature cavernous age differences. Like 'Sabrina' where gorgeous young Audrey Hepburn was supposed to be in love with 53 year old Humphrey Bogart. Great actor but... come on!

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 11/06/2020 23:47

Yes and all those Woody Allen films where he's with a younger beautiful and fragile woman (and that's not even starting on the allegations against him in real life).

Can we think of any films that show an older woman with a younger man (where it doesn't turn out that she's a psychotic murderer or something)?

And all those films not passing the Bechdel Test bechdeltestfest.com/about/

Well, I might allow a few films that are just about a man and his dog surviving in the wilderness or something!

JKRowlingTransExplosion · 12/06/2020 00:12

Never mind Sabrina, what about Funny Face? Fred Astaire looks like her grandad.

Goosefoot · 12/06/2020 02:16

I always felt that Woody Allen with those women was meant to be kind of a joke.

I've always been inclined to fall in love with grumpy old men, since I was a teenager, so I've never seen that as so far out though it does seem to be disproportionately represented. My sense is that it's a lot less common in films now. Which is too bad for me as I'm not all that interested in watching sensitive young hunks.

Goosefoot · 12/06/2020 02:21

Lots of good movies about women don't pass the Bechdel test. Usually the problem is a small cast, one or two or maybe three main roles.

And of course it's entirely possible to have a non-sexist film that is only about men, monks, or prisoners or sailors or whatever.

NotYourCisterinAus · 12/06/2020 02:40

Got to say I was wryly amused (but not at all surprised) when I heard that Netflix had removed all Chris Lilley's shows containing blackface, but left his womanface "comedy" available.

(Scare quotes because to be honest, I don't find him that funny!)

RoxytheRexy · 12/06/2020 06:44

The Big Bang Theory would have to go. An entire series about how harassing a women is how you should manipulate them into dating you. Showing us that ‘nice guys finish last’ but actually it’s ‘nice guys not actually that nice but creepy and whiny’

Ifonlyus · 12/06/2020 14:11

I hesitated to write Mad Men. I did actually enjoy it as a programme and went on to buy the book Mad Women on the back of it - written by a woman who worked in advertising in NY during that era.

I think you're right in that it's social history and we the viewer are supposed to be appalled by the sexism of that era and industry. Recently I've come to dislike watching anything which throws in superfluous detailed sex scenes because it's obvious it's put there by males to satisfy males and I think Mad Men does that some of the time. That's why I included it but I admit, that's probably personal to me.

Woody A makes my skin crawl. Depressing that he’s still making films, eg read there’s a new one with someone fanning and timothy chalomet.
