If anyone is looking for a book recommendation, this meticulously well researched book about the lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper is well worth reading. It is not about the murders, it is about the circumstances which caused the lives of women to unravel during the 19th century. It is written with a quiet fury and is very moving.

Cried my eyes out at this book. Was the lists of their possessions that did it. Really brought them alive to me. Brilliant book. I've passed it onto my ds who has just had to write an essay on East London during that time.

Loved this book.

Hallie Rubenhold also wrote this great Twitter thread about a young Russian murder victim:

All the media coverage was about the man who killed Anastasia Yeschenko and the gruesome details of her murder, but Rubenhold gave her back a little of her humanity.

I've also just listened to The Corset. While it's fictional it portrays the abject poverty of workers at the time very well.

The same author’s Bone China does similar, Disfordarkchocolate. Where can you go when there is no safety net of welfare state or family (also touches on functional alcoholism of working class women).

I completely agree. I was absolutely gripped by this book. So powerful and the amount of detail is incredible.
