Why does increased hygiene mean "gender neutral"?

Why will we have to have "gender neutral cubicles" in order to increase hygiene in public toilets after the pandemic?
I would have thought keeping single sex toilets would at least makes sure that half the population would have access to public loos where you stand a fighting chance of not having to paddle through pee or use urine covered toilets because the previous user can't aim.

I think it means we need to tut and eye roll to force men to wash their hands.
They can get to fuck.

CovidicusRex · 24/05/2020 15:32

I think they mean in terms of converting existing facilities to a one way system so you knock through the wall and use ladies as enter each men’s as exit for example. Seems a bit pointless though we you’re sharing toileting facilities. One would hope that increased cleaning would prevent standing in pee issues.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 24/05/2020 15:47

Like sitting “well behaved girls” next to “boisterous boys” in classrooms Hmm

Gronky · 24/05/2020 15:47

At my workplace the building was renovated in stages. This means we have about half the total toilets as traditional, with shared washing facilities and half as unisex self contained cubicles. Other than two younger researchers who, for whatever reason, think it's appropriate to identify you under the door by your shoes and greet you when you're in session; I also prefer the unisex because they tend to be cleaner (I don't have experience at other locations with a mixture of both for comparison).

My completely unsupported theory on this is that it's a combination of putting the user more in mind of their home toilet and/or that any mess made might be seen by the next user and connected to the previous occupant if they're observed leaving.

PerfectPenquins · 24/05/2020 15:49

Oh come on why is it down to women to make sure men act like human beings and not disgusting animals? It won't make any difference at all.

Aesopfable · 24/05/2020 16:18

Because the good little wimmin will clean the men’s toilet for them. After that is why wimmin’s toilets are cleaner isn’t it? Because we all going in armed with a loo brush and bleach.

In the Mail as well.

The Head of the British Public Toilet Association. His moment in the spotlight.

I cannot see how piss covered public loos add to hygiene, or to womens health.

Needmoresleep · 24/05/2020 16:20

I realised I assumed he was a man. Went back to check. He is.

Lamahaha · 24/05/2020 16:25

The smugness and arrogance of that MAN declaring what women must do...

We won't allow it. Has anyone tweeted this to the Baroness?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/05/2020 16:43

Surely it would be far cheaper and easier to just put screens between existing urinals to separate the men.

Needmoresleep · 24/05/2020 17:46

I am intrigued. Maybe it is the name Raymond. Raymond Martin 3rd no less. He is based in N. Ireland and seems to write most of the organisations articles. And, reminiscent of Stonewall's Trans-Advisory Group the BTA say "It is our policy not to list the names of private and honorary members of the BTA in order to protect their privacy."

Actually not much to suggest that the BTA is much more than Raymond.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 24/05/2020 17:59

I'm not sure knocking through is going to work any more often than you could just make a second entrance - very much depends on layout doesn't it?

And yes, from the studies I've seen, what they need to do is improve men's hand-hygiene, and I'm not a handwashing monitor, so they can do that themselves thanks.

MedusasButterDish · 24/05/2020 18:34

.... because to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

To someone with a bee in his bonnet about mixed-sex toilets, everything looks like an opportunity.

MedusasButterDish · 24/05/2020 18:36

It's a bit like those people who ask "have you tried cider vinegar", no matter what the problem is!

Just as monomaniacal. Not to be indulged.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/05/2020 18:48

am intrigued. Maybe it is the name Raymond. Raymond Martin 3rd no less. He is based in N. Ireland and seems to write most of the organisations articles.

And in an article I read specifically mentions him having an interest in toilets since his daughters were young and he had to take them into the men's. Seems like he's maybe got a bee in his bonnet about women's spaces?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/05/2020 20:24

Perhaps we could install little speakers in the men's, right in front of the sinks, that blare "wash your hands you filthy pig!" at anyone who tries to pass without turning on the water. Or, you know, expect men to act like responsible adults.

I'm not reminding anyone to wash their hands every time they use the loo unless they're under 5 years old.

WrongKindOfFace · 24/05/2020 20:26

How does it increase hygiene when the chance of piss on the floor will increase greatly?

Lamahaha · 25/05/2020 07:07

^
Also touching toilet seats. Men to raise them, women to lower them.
Women having to wipe seats that men have left with urine drops or spray on them.

When men pee in a toilet, there is a very fine spray everywhere. If they don't clean it every day it collects into a kind of disgusting sticky yellowish layer on the seat, under the seat, on the floor, around the toilet rim.
It's almost always women who have to clean this up.
It's the reason why meticulous German housewives train their sons to sit while peeing.
My landlady did this with her sons. She was the childminder for my son when he was being potty trained so he learned to do that too. So like many German men, he sits to pee. I didn't even know this up to a few years ago!

Anyway to get back on topic:
removing urinals, which are quick and don't need to be touched, makes absolutely NO sense.

This is a poor excuse for introducing mixed-sex loos, which both sexes will hate for a variety of reasons.
