Is this advert transphobic?

Someone alert the TRAs, this advert says that men have prostates.

Surely some women have prostates too? And some men don’t have prostates, either by being born with a uterus or from surgery. It’s outrageous that the ad is clearly marketed with the word MEN in the title!

Awaits TRA outrage....

Still waiting....

Tumbleweed.....

How childish these people are. I expect it was on social media!

Smurftastic · 27/05/2020 14:46

Ereshkig I believe they didn't use the word 'boohoo' per se but that was the gist. I can't be bothered to find the actual quote as it still gives me the rage! Mark your idea for the ultra-inclusive advert is brilliant, maybe we should send it to them for careful consideration?

MedusasButterDish · 27/05/2020 15:40

"Prostate havers", like "people with a cervix" or "uterus havers" is so clumsy, such ugly English.

This is not language for actual human beings... which is ironic, given how the paranoid TRAs love to scream : "You don't want me to exist!"

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/05/2020 15:41

I've read plenty of actual messages which literally say boo hoo transphobe so it wouldn't surprise me Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/05/2020 15:43

We should all refer to all men and most MTF trans people simply as "penis owners". It's the inclusive way.

And not at all inclusive for someone who has limited English. I’m sure there are many people who can read and understand the words man or woman but would be put off and perplexed by penis haver and uterus haver.

Also, why have there not been swathes of trans men complaining about men ‘showing off’ about having prostates?

FalseImage · 27/05/2020 17:43

It's not transphobic, but it is ignorant of the fact that there are legally identified men that have a cervix, and legally identified women that have a prostrate. Legally identified via a GRC. The advert ignores that by assuming it's only men that can get prostate cancer. It would be more accurate to say "anyone with a prostrate" should be aware.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/05/2020 18:02

Except that they don't tend to use that language because it would alienate the men that they want to reach, in the same way it does women, except that women are much more used to feeling dehumanised. Men's feelings matter. We can't have them disengaging.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/05/2020 18:05

And it is only biological males (men) who can get prostate cancer. Another reason to repeal the GRA. "Prostate" is not particularly accessible language, just like "cervix" isn't. They can directly target trans people for screening without pretending that both sexes can have a cervix or a prostate.

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/05/2020 18:06

As an aside almost if you have had a full hysterectomy do you still have a cervix?
I don’t believe there is an operation that is likely to result in the removal of a man’s prostate.

JellySlice · 27/05/2020 18:32

Cancer.

JellySlice · 27/05/2020 18:33

But such a man would not be the target of the ad. He would already know all about it Sad

FalseImage · 31/05/2020 09:52

The relevant NHS info on screening info for Transgender people, however prostate screening is not routinely provided, only upon request from a GP.

Lordfrontpaw · 31/05/2020 09:59

Why can’t the NHS just say they are mostly there to attend to the body - whatever shape/type the body is.

Aesopfable · 31/05/2020 10:08

Yes it is fun to play with this. But we have men and we have women. Transwomen are men and know they are, and transmen are women and know they are. Language is important and sex matters.

There's an asymmetry here, in willingness to play dirty. Attacking a cancer research organisation over a pretended, fabricated misunderstanding is definitely playing dirty.

How to deal with that?
