Modibodi advert

I just had one come up on my face book timeline and there appeared to be an argument in the comments about them using rather sexualised pics of teens or presumably young women as I'm guessing using actual teens unless they were 18 or over would not be appropriate.

The picture was of a girl sat in her pants painting and to be fair there have been similar pictures where they were sitting around on beanbags in their underwear reading.

Someone else was accusing those complaining of being the perverts for seeing them in that way.

However it was all a bit reminiscent of the whole stereotypical teen movie shit where they all pillow fight in their underwear...

I did feel they had a point to be fair. How can an advert for period underwear of all things still look like it was written by and for men...

I agree. I always thought that I was very weird for not sitting around or walking around in my undies (with or without friends present). It is sad to see that this type of ad continues, but looking at nearly every perfume ad or make up ad is just the same. And the vacant look with mouth open pose?? I remember when that first became so overdone and I watched a Body Language TV documentary (Might have been Alan Pease) in the 90s that pointed that 'sexy' look towards porn.

I understand that showing women in their underwear for an unrelated product is a bit off. But an underwear advert surely needs to show the underwear

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 10:42

Its period underwear so why bean bags pillow fights and group strips. Why not messy hair a hot water bottle an oversized t shirt and surrounded by paracetamol packets and chocolate ?

They are not pillow fighting and 'group strips' whatever they are do not feature in the ads I have. The ads I have do feature messy hair and certainly also feature a healthy range of bodies. The problem with oversized t shirts is that they would hide the product. Again the ads I have don't have any sort of a sexual element in terms of the styling and dress. Not all women spend their periods shovelling chocolate and paracetamol down their throats!

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 10:56

More likely than sitting around with your mate in your underwear eating pizza though isnt it?

Would we see an advert with 2 men sat in pants sharing headphones on beanbags?

Surely the messaging within the advert is that these period pants will change your life and turn your period from misery into feeling your best, confident, self (and trying to make it obvious that they are attractive underwear rather than some kind of incontinence nappy) maybe overdoing it, but not as bad as the woman rolerblading in white trousers back in the day.

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 11:05

The rolled blading was always dreadful. Agreed!!!

I would see " life changing " as being able to go to school worry free.

Or work worry free.

Why go for something so stereotypical as a girly slumber party style vibe

Sarah - no you are right, two men are far more likely to be shown oiled up and moodily staring into the distance in the desert if they are advertising pants, much more realistic! Not to mention they are also likely to have very unrealistic body types compared with most men, I have never seen a man with a ;normal' body type advertising underwear.

lemonsandlimes123 · 04/05/2020 11:08

Because they want to show the product! And i can imagine the complaints if they showed a teenage girl going to school worry free in just her pants! Grin

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 11:13

If they showed a woman going to work and proved you couldnt see then through the trousers or skirt that would be a better message though wouldnt it?

Has anyone ever worried about whether or not they can confidently sit next to their friends in the bedroom.

Or do they worry that they are too busy to go to the bath room regularly or that their san pro is visible through clothing ?

OP posts:
lemonsandlimes123 · 04/05/2020 11:20

Well we are all different and I would certainly rather see the product in an advert than a shoehorned message about still being able to work when on your period. Then again it has never occurred to me that I couldn't or that my san pro would be visible through clothing. The adverts actually worked on me! I bought some and am delighted with them. I guess seeing that the product is not a huge nappy like garment and seeing it being used by non hippy middle aged types did influence me, I am probably very shallow for this but honestly the lack of 'worthiness' in the advertising definitely appealed.

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 11:30

You can see the product on the pics on the sale pages . Just minus the faces and the stereotypical approach to what girls do or want them for.

Having seen alot of the threads on MN where they have been recommended, the same questions come up.

Practical questions about whether they are washing machine /tumble dryer safe

Do they bulk up and become visible through clothing

Are they expensive etc

I'd be more likely to click on something if it came up in giant letters " cheaper than you think" or something.

I've never bought underwear on the pretence of " will I fit in if I go to a trouser
free slumber party "

Happy to accept I'm odd though..

It’s shite sarah

I agree. It’s what men think women do 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

lemonsandlimes123 · 04/05/2020 11:37

Yes but advertising is to get you to the sales page where you can find all the info you need. Adverts are there to give an impression not detailed info. Well like I said the feel of the ads work for me and the ones that are more slumber party like are actually generally for their 'Red' range which is aimed at younger teenagers and TBH as a teenager it would not be unusual to have a sleepover and sit around in pants and tshirts!

SarahTancredi · 04/05/2020 11:41

Yet I don't know anyone who's ever done that ....

I have never ever stayed over at a friends house in underwear. Nor has dd. There are usually other people in the house sho dont want to be confronted with girls sat around half undressed . Getting into Jammies is one thing. But when there are small children about or brothers or dogs ( claws on bare legs...ouch) it would not really be appropriate would it. Unless u plan on spending the time putting on and taking off trousers to go to the bathroom or downstairs for a drink.

No advertising will speak to everyone! It seems that for you this campaign misses the mark and speaks to a circumstance you seem to have trouble even conceiving of. I on the other hand can identify with it far more easily. No doubt we are quite different people and probably respond differently to ads across the board no matter what the product is. I disagree with your reading of it as a male view of women though as i am well able to identify with aspects of it.
