Film made by Emma Thompson being shown tonight on BBC2.

Not saying its brilliant but if you needed a reminder of the second class status of women in 19th century Britain watch this.

I really love this film

I enjoyed the film and have just gone on Wikipedia to see what happened after she left Ruskin.

In 1855, she married John Millais and they had eight children together: Everett, born in 1856; George, born in 1857; Effie, born in 1858; Mary, born in 1860; Alice, born in 1862; Geoffroy, born in 1863; John in 1865; and Sophie in 1868

8 children in 12 years sounds grim.

Probably not uncommon for the time. Effie and Millais seem to be a genuine love- match. Millais was very commercially successful which would have helped to make the pregnancies slightly less grim.

Effie also took on a managerial role for Millais' career, and was very good at it. She was a remarkable woman in her own right.
