Look at this. Now there’s a genuine health crisis, all the nonsense has been pushed aside.

Pregnant women, pregnant mothers.

That's true MarDhea. They just popped up on my timeline and gave me the rage!

OhHolyJesus · 20/03/2020 08:44

Elective surgeries are not life saving and are 'non-essential' yes. Not the person/patient, the surgery.

There is probably someone somewhere moaning about their nose job being delayed.

I've not really thought too about this before but a woman receiving an elective mastectomy would need someone to look after her afterwards too. A mother or a partner I imagine. It's a huge life-limiting operation.

Cancelling it during a time of a global health crisis seems sensible to me. FFS.

I commented on another thread - in current circumstances there will be a lot of attitudes and issues to which the most appropriate response is 'Don't be silly'.

definitelygc · 20/03/2020 10:38

Well perhaps the silver lining of all this will be a push back against the wokerati. Our favourite mayor Hmm Mr Khan tweeted that people shouldn't refer to coronavirus as "Chinese" as it stigmatises Chinese people. While yes in principle I agree, the majority of the replies were (rightly) "get a grip Sadiq". His city is in meltdown and he's still tweeting about language policing! What a wally.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 20/03/2020 11:05

Sadiq Khan is correct. The WHO is clear that no virus should ever be referred to by any form of geographic or ethnic term. There have been many verbal and a few physical assaults on people who might look randomly oriental in London and elsewhere.

definitelygc · 20/03/2020 11:47

There have been many verbal and a few physical assaults on people who might look randomly oriental in London and elsewhere.

If that is true then fair enough. I'm amazed that that would happen but I guess nothing is beyond belief at the moment.

Dreamprincess · 20/03/2020 11:48

The WHO is clear that no virus should ever be referred to by any form of geographic or ethnic term.

So now how do we determine the difference between German measles and measles, for example? Twitter is awash with such examples. Someone is going to have to address this problem. Personally I have no problem with rickets being named as the English disease, as it was/possibly is prevalent among our poor: similarly the current strain of Corona virus started in the wild animal markets in China: hence this strain is called Chinese.

With regard to the verbal and physical assaults, there is a group of idiots in our society who will pick on anyone they perceive as "different", "odd" etc. eg the recent attack on two lesbians on a bus. I think this is a problem of education and stupidity, rather than the name.

Davros · 20/03/2020 11:57

Rubella and measles

Mockerswithnoknockers · 20/03/2020 12:12

Rubella is the correct term.

Mystraightenersarebroken · 20/03/2020 12:50

I just noticed this on a video about social distancing on the BBC website 'pregnant women' not 'people'. Like a PP, I was surprised how much that lifted my heart.

Durgasarrow · 20/03/2020 13:15

shit got real

ErrolTheDragon · 20/03/2020 13:30

If Trump is going to persist in labelling CORVID19 as 'Chinese', maybe everyone needs to correct a mistake of the past, caused by wartime suppression of bad news and always refer to the pandemic at the end of WWII as 'American Flu'. It only got associated with Spain because they were neutral and so it was reported there.

JellySlice · 29/03/2020 08:33

More common sense language:

ThinEndoftheWedge · 29/03/2020 08:45

People inc in mainstream media are comparing Covid-19 to the ‘1918 Spanish Flu’. Have the Spanish complained that this is racist?

Interestingly, it didn’t come from Spain - it is only called the Spanish flu as the Spanish newspapers were first to report it. Other countries - inc UK - failed to report it as they were concerned about national morale post WWI.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 29/03/2020 09:00

Errol - I have sort of repeated your post - sorry! I didn’t know the American connection.

SpeedofaSloth · 29/03/2020 19:41

The NHS 111 page for covid-19 refers to male and female only, I note. There is a bit of text telling anyone who can't answer to call 111 to discuss it. Good - there is a clear sex difference in outcome, I am pleased to see the NHS being straight forward about this for a change

ShadyAcromat · 29/03/2020 19:53

Even Buzzfeed have an article about pregnant women today and usually they couldn't be more woke buzzfeed.com/emilyashton/coronavirus-pregnancy-birth-nhs

ChiaraRimini · 29/03/2020 19:56

Also, men are more likely to die from COVID19 then women, you don't have to a scientist to figure out what the chances are for TW and TM.
(Spoiler alert, frilly underwear and makeup ain't gonna make a difference)

Sorry wrong thread! Reported.

Melroses · 01/04/2020 17:22

There was a piece on R4 Today about birth partners www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000gskl 15 minute from the end, we had 'The pregnant public' which is a new one (although she did say women earlier).
