Sefton council response to IWD day flag

I complained to Sefton Council about them removing the Woman = adult human female flag following protests from trans activists.

I get the following great big fuck off response from the Civic and Mayoral Services Officer.

^Thank you for contacting Sefton Council. We have received a significant amount of feedback on this matter and have prepared the following statement to clarify the Council’s position.

A few weeks ago we were asked by someone unconnected with the Council if we would consider flying flags at Bootle and Southport Town Halls in celebration of International Women’s Day. We agreed to the request as we are proud to support all members of our communities.
International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8. The day has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911. The day is not country, group or organisation specific.
We agreed to fly the flags that were supplied from the person who approached us.
We flew the flags on Monday 2nd March 2020 but later day we received a number of complaints about the flags from people believing them to be transphobic and the flags were removed that afternoon. Whilst we appreciate that some people did not consider them to be transphobic, given that some people did, we considered it appropriate to remove the flags. It was never our intention to cause any offence by flying the flags.
We are a local authority with a proud history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights across the borough, having been awarded the NAVAJO LGBTQ Quality Mark for our work and we continue to support all members of our communities.
In previous years we have illuminated our civic buildings with the rainbow flag and have flown rainbow flags at both Bootle and Southport Town Halls to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
We will continue to show our support to the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate the diversity of all our communities and residents across our beautiful borough.
2 correct flags from the IWD organisation were obtained and were flown from Friday 6th March 2020 to Monday 9th March 2020. The flags bore the logo for the IWD and the words “International Women’s Day”.
I trust this explains the Council’s position.^

To which I have responded "Thank you for your email, which certainly clarifies your position. It is good to see you support LGBTQ+ rights. A pity that you don't extend the same suppport to women's rights - rights that the trans rights activist movement is in the unethical and cynical process of dismantling. I can't decide if the council's position is one of well-meaning naivety or terminal stupidity. What is certain is that you have been cleverly manipulated by a very small section of the trans movement, that in no way represents the majority of people with gender dysphoria.

I love your reply.

Their reply is...pathetic. And disheartening.

Fandoozle1 · 11/03/2020 19:31

OP, your reply is bloody brilliant!!!!

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 11/03/2020 19:56

I got the same reply today I have replied saying please would they answer my original question “what is offensive about the definition of woman” because their email doesn’t address it...

ThinEndoftheWedge · 11/03/2020 19:58

I can't decide if ...‘s position is one of well-meaning naivety or terminal stupidity..

I’m stealing that one...

Nice reply. Did they actually fly the flag for IWD. I see they do an awful lot for LGBetc. Is there any way of seeing all the the flags they fly and the causes they are for? I would assume they fly the rainbow and/or trans flag for a good part of the year for the variis days and months.

Did the council do anything else for IWD or Woman’s history month?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/03/2020 08:07

Your response is excellent. I too had the same response. I replied

Thank you for confirming your utter disregard for women. You are being played by a very loud, aggressive minority and, in years to come, you will feel ashamed of your actions.

OhHolyJesus · 12/03/2020 08:22

I had the same reply.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 12/03/2020 08:30

I got the same one. I told them it was a bloody insult which it is. I want to know how some twitter random got the flags taken down when I and other women in the constituency were completely ignored.

AnyOldSpartabix · 12/03/2020 08:35

Whilst I absolutely agree with your analysis regarding the lack of support for women’s rights, and I applaud the woman who supplied the flags, I suspect certain members of the council will feel that they were played.

Had they been convinced to support women’s rights, and then backed down after protests, that would have been another matter entirely. As it was, they find themselves in the embarrassing position of having been tricked into appearing to support something they currently don’t. Of course they are going to be defensive.

DICarter1 · 12/03/2020 08:44

I think if they start flying trans flags you should complain. If a minority complain about IWD flags the same should be done for trans flags. Utterly sick of places folding like deckchairs to some loud mouth TRAs. People need to hold their positions. My toddler screams for ice cream and I don’t just give them ice cream because their sibling got a biscuit and they didn’t want it.

DrySnitch · 12/03/2020 11:56

Why, when making a point about Womens Rights do we always get the whole 'we support the lgbtqia2s' alphabet soup response? It's not relevant!

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/03/2020 12:22

Next time, someone report the rainbow flag for being transphobic - if the only criteria for being 'transphobic' is 'someone thinks so', this should be straightforward.
