Women are talking and they are collaborating.
When we stand together we are powerful.

if they really have now proved beyond doubt that they Twitter is a bunch of politically captured misogynists without ethics, bent on stamping out rights for women?

I was banned yesterday for accidentally referring to a TW as “he” in a conversation with someone else. I didn’t communicate directly with the TW, I didn’t threaten, harass or incite violence towards them. But I referred to them in a tweet to someone else automatically/subconsciously as “he” (because they were displaying male pattern behaviour, acting in a very misogynistic way, and were clearly male in their photo) and bang! I’m suspended, presumably because said TW went running to Twitter complaining of literal violence, hate speech and all that shit.

So I think we know the answer to that one Michelle

I have started complaining to Twitter when I see nasty comments towards feminists by TRAs, because it's hateful towards a person with a protected characteristic (sex) So far they have upheld my complaints. If we all start doing it, we will chip away. Smile

TedsFederationRep · 08/03/2020 10:36

The Twitter thread has been restored and following on from this, I've also signed the Conservative Women's Pledge. As ProdigalKittens pointed out upthread: left wing, right wing, neither matters when our sex-based rights are being eroded. On this, we are united.

Winesalot · 08/03/2020 11:13

430 signatures so far.

MrsSnippyPants · 08/03/2020 12:56

In 12 hours we have:
Almost 600 signatures on the petition
Almost 150 followers on the Facebook page
Almost 800 followers on Twitter

Whatever your thoughts on petitions, or where those petitions should be, it remains a way for people to register their support.

Political parties are not listening to women in their individual parties. In fact, some are actively disciplining them and expelling them.
Many of us are staying in our parties to fight from within. Many of us have left, after having the fight knocked out of us by months and months of being in limbo as we await a verdict on our 'suitability' to remain in a party.

On it's own, this petition may not do much, but it is yet another piece of evidence people can take along to show their MPs, or link to in an email, to show that women just want to keep their rights! The things we are asking of Liz Truss are clear and should be simple to implement. Refusing to engage with those questions will not look good. Ask your MP why any of these things are horrendously difficult:

Clarify and further enshrine in law the legal definitions of 'Woman' and 'Sex' in order to make current legislation clear and unambiguous and ensure data used to inform government policy is correctly recorded.

Publish guidance explaining and enforcing the single sex exemptions in the Equality Act 2010. A new statutory Code of Practice must help everyone be clear on what “single sex” means, as recommended by the Women and Equalities Select Committee in July 2019.

Ensure all new laws, amendments, and policies are assessed for their impact on 51% of the population, women and girls.

MPs are beginning to speak out, let's not get caught up in looking for the perfect way to do things.
Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Or as I used to say to my teenagers, JFDI!

Excellent one of those signatures is mine - the phrase we use in this house is “Brave rather than perfect”

Thank you to all the brave women who worked together to make this happen.

StealthPolarBear · 08/03/2020 13:17

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg did twitter email you? Did they make assumptions about your gender?

Lollygaggles · 08/03/2020 13:18

Well done and thank you. I agree that we have to capture this momentum. We are changing minds.

FemiLANGul · 08/03/2020 13:32

I cant find the group on facebook Confused the link in the OP works and brings up a page in my browser, but when I put the details into the app nothing comes up.

I've signed every women's pledge I could find and have found the people behind the Conservative Women's Pledge both feisty and helpful on Twitter.

ClitoriaTernatea · 08/03/2020 19:44

I also feel unable to sign.

I'll try and explain why.

"Clarify and further enshrine in law the legal definitions of 'Woman' and 'Sex' in order to make current legislation clear and unambiguous and ensure data used to inform government policy is correctly recorded."

It should be explained how the petitioners want this done, that the definition of 'woman' (and girls) must not be untethered from the female sex. Otherwise you could be petitioning for an outcome you don't want. It is important to be explicit about what you mean and what you are asking for.

"Publish guidance explaining and enforcing the single sex exemptions in the Equality Act 2010. A new statutory Code of Practice must help everyone be clear on what “single sex” means, as recommended by the Women and Equalities Select Committee in July 2019."

Why a new code of practice? What's needed is clarity within the existing framework of the EHRC.

"Ensure all new laws, amendments, and policies are assessed for their impact on 51% of the population, women and girls."

Sadly, women and girls now make up less than half the population. The impact of global misogyny has for the first time since records began resulted in women becoming the minority sex.

MrsSnippyPants · 08/03/2020 20:07

That's great Clitoria, why don't you get a petition together saying al that and then get women from six different political parties to agree to it.

  1. It is up to the government how to get this done, that's their job 2)The Parliamentary Committee were VERY clear that new code of practice was needed.
  2. UK population stats.

Post the link to your petition, I'll be the first to sign.

Errol - "Bi is only two ... if there's six parties involved then it should be sexa- partisan support, surely?"

Whoops, getting a little over-excited and I have been out and drinking wine..Grin

Mummylin · 08/03/2020 23:03

Signed.

StealthPolarBear · 09/03/2020 06:22

Did anything happen about this? It all seeemd a bit flat on the day.

MrsSnippyPants · 09/03/2020 09:01

In what way Stealth?

It was a petition launch, not sure what you think should have happened? Over 1000 signatures in 24 hours, even though Twitter blocked the account for hours.

It’s for the long haul, not a one day wonder.

StealthPolarBear · 09/03/2020 09:08

Ah OK I thought it was the creation of. A more permanent more visible group. I expected a mention on the news and as a pp said I hoped they were setting up a new party. I had misunderstood, and the petition alone is great but do MPs need a petition to get something debated?
Do we know who they are?

Mner2000 · 09/03/2020 12:10

Great idea. I have signed and following on twitter etc. Good luck with it.

MrsSnippyPants · 09/03/2020 12:17

The petition is to make the point that this is an issue for women of all political persuasions and none. Some people did not want to sign a petition that was tied to a particular party.

This petition makes the clear point that women are working together to protect their sex-based rights, that they will cross political divides to do that, and that they are reaching out to people who have no interest in politics too.

We will not be divided by politics, we will not be set against each other, we are in agreement.

By the way, I love #TheWordWomanIsTaken. That is awesome.

OhHolyJesus · 09/03/2020 12:41

I signed all the women party pledges before the election as I despite being a member of the Greens (it's borderline, believe me) I support all politician parties that support women (doesn't mean I'm going to vote for them though), so this is simply an extension of that for me.

I think this is a great example of how we can work together on single issues to make changes where something has gone very, very wrong. There has been feminist in-fighting and bad-mouthing and it's tedious and distracting to our greater cause.

This is reassuring, it's only the beginning.
