OT Brimful of Asha

This is OT, but if anyone remembers the song Brimful of Asha, there is a Times article about Cornershop. Cultural diversity in music, yet somehow quintessentially English. That song still resonates, like a slice of sunshine, an ode to Asha Bhosle.

Incredible as it may seem, a little indie band from the West Midlands once toppled the mighty Céline Dion from her pop throne. In February 1998, Norman Cook’s remix of Brimful of Asha by Cornershop, a tribute to the Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle set to a delightful Sixties-style melody, knocked the Canadian warbler’s Titanic theme My Heart Will Go On off the top spot. Britpop may be retrospectively remembered as a triumph of laddishness, but it also allowed creative outsiders such as Cornershop — made up of the Wolverhampton singer Tjinder Singh and his Canada-born bandmate Ben Ayres — to have a pop at the mainstream, however briefly

Still on my playlist. One of my favourite happy songs.

for ages I thought it was about a girl named "Asha Barnsley"

😂😂

Think I’ve got a CD single floating about somewhere...

brimfullofasha · 07/03/2020 18:30

Love this song. So happy and care-free 😁

june2007 · 07/03/2020 18:45

It knocked Titanic off the spot becayuse by then we probably had enough of it. (love Celine though.) And Brimful of Asha is also a great tune. Whose singing it right now?

AutumnRose1 · 07/03/2020 19:26

Well, we’ve gone backwards

I remember the times of the song fondly

My skin colour didn’t matter, we were all British.

Now the Nish Kumars and the academics of the world have worked out there’s money in going back 100 years, we’ve got trouble. Pisses me right off.

AutumnRose1 · 07/03/2020 19:29

TheRealMckenna “ Music used to be good.”

It is still is, there’s some superb music around.

Binterested · 07/03/2020 19:53

The video is good through a feminist lens too. Just a girl, not underdressed, not twerking, listening to music and experiencing moments of joy by herself in a room of her own.

ChaiTea1 · 07/03/2020 19:54

Love that song, one of my all time favourites Grin

theflushedzebra · 07/03/2020 21:30

Love this song! Wine Thanks

theflushedzebra · 07/03/2020 21:33

We have a record player now, does anyone else? IME it's unusual now. My brother does, and BIL - but they're both seriously into music (professionally). DH bought one a couple of years ago and unboxed his (massive) collection of records from boxes in the garage - and I got out my (tiny) collection saved from student days. Nothing like vinyl.

I agree Rose

JessicaLangoustine Movie Mahal- wow that's a blast from the past! Wish that was back on now!

theflushedzebra · 07/03/2020 21:58

Do we all think our "late teen/20s" era was the best? I certainly do. I hark back to those times so much.

Also by Norman Cook, and possibly one of my most favourite records & videos of all time

Just glorious.

pigsknickers · 07/03/2020 22:01

I never really knew who the song was about - I'm going to add it to my (very short) list of songs sung by men about women who aren't their love interest or their mum Grin

No. Not at all.

TheMemoryLingers · 07/03/2020 22:05

I've got one. I've got quite a lot of stuff on vinyl - still got all my 7" singles!

theflushedzebra · 07/03/2020 22:09

Oh lucky you, TheMemoryLingers - if I had my old 7" singles, I'd still have Adam and the Ants Prince Charming, and Blondie The Tide is High

AutumnRose1 · 07/03/2020 22:13

Mum still has a record player and the singles we bought

We don’t use them. We find a vinyl a pain. We’re actually thinking about selling as some sort of collection on eBay. There’s nothing on vinyl that we can’t get in a more convenient way. I can’t imagine setting up singles in a record player now. And all the worry about scratching it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 07/03/2020 22:30

Watching that video makes me sad for what we've lost, seeing a happy non sexualized teenage girl bopping around in her room acting like an actual teenage girl. She'd be twerking in booty shorts and maniacally contouring if they made it now.

theflushedzebra · 07/03/2020 22:40

I know just what you mean ProdigalKittens - she's just dancing, in a completely non-sexualised way. Does that even exist now?

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/03/2020 22:43

Asha Bhosle is still the voice of Indian youth - shocking since she’s in her eighties.

theflushedzebra · 07/03/2020 22:44

Anyone imagine a woman just singing in a white jumper now?

Billie Eilish, maybe.

AutumnRose1 · 07/03/2020 22:47

No idea what the Mannequin Challenge is but this video for the song is cheery too

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 07/03/2020 22:59

I saw that the DM did had a story in their sidebar where they had Billie Eilish on holiday in swimwear and I was so angry about it. That young woman has very clearly communicated that she does not want to be slobbered over in a sexualized way by the media. Leave her alone.

Some of you really need to expand your cultural boundaries.
