Furious to see that the Director of Amnesty International, Kate Allen, is among those writing to the Guardian to protest the Suzanne Moore article.

www.pinknews.co.uk/2020/03/05/the-guardian-anti-trans-editorial-feminists-letter-suzanne-moore-transphobia/

The Guardian link is here but doesn;'t show all the signatories: www.theguardian.com/society/2020/mar/04/differing-perspectives-on-transgender-rights

I belong to Amnesty, and my membership goes towards battling for human rights - I thought. I'm writing to Amnesty suggesting they should think about the rights of those lately branded as "hate groups" and try standing up for free speech rather than a particular ideology. I don't know whether to cancel my membership. I notice the director of Liberty also signed, which I also think is completely inappropriate.

I'm posting this here because other members of Amnesty or Liberty might want to let them know what they think too.

That ship has sailed long ago with Amnesty. They’re also enthusiastic members of the pimp lobby b

PhoenixBuchanan · 05/03/2020 17:55

Amnesty are prostitution apologists. Men have a right to sex, don't you know! There are many reasons to cancel an Amnesty membership.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 17:59

Amnesty - along with stonewall are no longer fit for purpose. They should just either get back to their knitting or just shut up.

Beamur · 05/03/2020 18:00

Yup. Can't remember the precise details but there was a demonstration outside their offices not so long ago, but they were the wrong sort of protesters. Amnesty locked their doors and if I remember, refused to engage with the protesters - refused to let them have any water, etc. Not a good look.
Lost my support over their stance on prostitution too.

jadefinch · 05/03/2020 18:01

Amnesty have been doing this for well over a year. Apparently its entire staff is made up of woke bearded blokes and lib fems who bang on about sex work. This is what they're most interested in campaigning for now

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 18:02

I cancelled my Amnesty membership when it started pimping for pimps

Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 18:02

Why don’t they set up a charity for wed workers then. So many cuckoos these days. Fat lazy little sods.

Goosefoot · 05/03/2020 18:02

I've been trying to convince my husband to give up on Amnesty for a while. They lost the plot when their focus became too wide.

AnxiousAdventurer · 05/03/2020 18:05

And I've been a member for years - just assuming I was doing a good thing. Obviously not paying attention.

Amnesty started selling women down the river wholesale years ago with their stance on 'sex work' ie men's right to stick their erections in women's bodies. I was an active supporter before that. Haven't looked at them the same way since. I'd find a different organisation to send money to, if I were you. I know it's so disheartening.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 18:09

They are often chugging near my office - never ask me though (I assume I have a wild look in my eye...)

HarrietThePi · 05/03/2020 18:11

I stopped giving to amnesty over their view on prostitution being a huMANs right.

squirrelybiscuits · 05/03/2020 18:14

hope this posts...

Letter to Guardian
Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 18:16

That’s rather... painful looking!

HarrietThePi · 05/03/2020 18:18

I think writing to them definitely wouldn't hurt, but I really doubt they would listen. They seem to be a lost cause sadly.

HarrietThePi · 05/03/2020 18:20

Ouch. That does look painful!

AnxiousAdventurer · 05/03/2020 18:21

I used to belong to Liberty too - which is about civil liberties/human rights and was thinking about rejoining them. Because, you know, these things are important. But that they would sign that letter to the Guardian just days after a woman academic was deplatformed...

“Moore’s column does not represent the views of the public, nor is it representative of the views of most women,”

Are they sure about that? I think not! Deluded people, living in a bubble.

stumbledin · 05/03/2020 18:28

A lot of women gave up when they sacked Gita Sahgal there was a very good letter circulated at the time but I cant find it. Link to Guardian Blush article. www.theguardian.com/world/2010/apr/25/gita-sahgal-amnesty-international

You would have thought that Amnesty would have been so proud to have had a woman with this history of activism representing them. Co founder of both Southall Black Sisters and Women Against Fundamentalism en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gita_Sahgal

But clearly they dont want women who think for themselves!

AnotherNightWatering · 05/03/2020 18:28

Am amazed that the editor of New Scientist (!) signed it.

Lordfrontpaw · 05/03/2020 18:30

Wtf? Oh for the love of the wee man... have they all lost their minds?

Oh well, it will come back and smack them in the face eventually. And of course we will have the screenshots...

Dozer · 05/03/2020 18:31

Left amnesty over prostitution.

Chiochan · 05/03/2020 18:36

Amnesty think doing sex to someone else is a human right?

Maybe I should call in at their office, lots of hunky young trendies there. Im sure they wont have a problem with me pitching up demanding sex.

AnxiousAdventurer · 05/03/2020 19:13

I feel these last few weeks that I'm waking up and finding all the organisations I thought I'd supported have been taken over by a cult.

Always good to check. The Body Shop seems ok now. I wouldn’t swear to it.
