Anyone watching bbc Parliament, IWD debate?

Just watching the speeches live on international women's day debate (not sure what the debate is as such).
Listening to Lizz Truss speaking very sensibly and was really struck when they planned out to show the whole house how few MPs were actually there. Compared to something they view as "important".
Dawn Butler is now speaking and seems to know that there is a difference between men and women - almost sounds normal (so far!) I really wish someone would ask her about the "child is born without sex" comment. What a hypocrite.

Go Jackie Doyle-Price.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 05/03/2020 14:25

Conflict of trans rights and women's rights, why cannot we protect both. Now criticising treatment of girls who identify themselves as boys

PaleBlueMoonlight · 05/03/2020 14:26

She seems to get it.

FemaleAndLearning · 05/03/2020 14:35

Wow, Jackie Doyle-Price, Con MP for Thurrock. She stated women are not transphobes for defending female spaces. Mentioned Karen White. Talked about consent at Tavistick and used the term irreversible changes. Great concern for autistic girls. Said we need to be more honest about puberty, it's horrible! If she had been a teenager now she hates to think what would have happened as she was a tom boy. She was brilliant.

Is there anyone who has the Labour MP for mid Derbyshire? She was going on about her granddaughters and how her youngest GG, Betty, has a great future. If she is your MP please write and make her aware of the issues.

Throughthegate · 05/03/2020 14:43

I'm sorry to have missed those two.

Just looked her up. She'd already been tweeting about this:

twitter.com/JackieDP/status/1231187366204887040

And her Twitter feed in general is suggestive of someone who understands actual, materially-grounded feminism.

Throughthegate · 05/03/2020 14:54

Joanna Cherry is speaking of the importance of women being able to meet while excluding certain groups (ie men).
Now saying if gender is innate that this means women could identify out of their oppression.
And now no-platforming.
Great stuff.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 05/03/2020 14:55

Now on gender and sex and no platforming

Throughthegate · 05/03/2020 14:57

There's probably more of us watching from mumsnet than in the Houses of Parliament

What a woman.

boatyardblues · 05/03/2020 15:04

I’m watching Jackie on catch-up. Thanks for the heads-up.

NellieEllie · 05/03/2020 15:06

What a great speech. Great summary of the male violence women and girls suffer globally - and that they cannot identify out of. Right to organise on basis of sex, the injustice of no platforming, a call to left and right to support free speech.

GCAcademic · 05/03/2020 15:08

I'm watching Jackie on catch-up too. She is brilliant on how the health service fails women.

Throughthegate · 05/03/2020 15:10

Joanna Cherry has been talked about as a potential new SNP leader - that would be great for Scotland if so.
However, Mhairi Black as been talked about one as well, so...

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 15:12

Alex Davies-Jones very moving about motherhood

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 15:13

They're actually talking about women's bodies (ie women's biology)

Cwenthryth · 05/03/2020 15:14

Thanks for the heads up will stick it on catch up later :-)

boatyardblues · 05/03/2020 15:19

“We live in a society that values looking after machines more than looking after people.” Liz Saville Roberts (Plaid Cymru) on the way that caring roles, traditionally done by women, are less well paid than other work. It’s a wide-ranging talk on poverty & how women are disproportionately affected.

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 15:37

Naz Shah in her summing up ignoring Joanna Cherry's hugely important speech, it seems?

Throughthegate · 05/03/2020 15:39

I would love to see Dawn Butler and Jess Philips having to answer direct questions from Joanna Cherry.

OP posts:
Thinkingabout1t · 05/03/2020 15:44

Joanna Cherry would surely have more support among voters than Mhairi Black, wouldn't she? Trouble is the leaders aren't chosen by the electorate.

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 15:47

Maria Caulfield summing up for government ...

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 15:48

... and no specific mention of Joanna Cherry & sex based rights / assembly

Thinkingabout1t · 05/03/2020 15:54

Jackie Doyle-Price, Con MP for Thurrock, ... stated women are not transphobes for defending female spaces

That's fantastic, I'm glad she's speaking up. But the Tories seem to be the only mainstream party that doesn't toe the trans line. If Labour or the Greens don't start backing women (and I can't see that happening), I'm just hoping the Communist Party GB puts up a candidate in our constituency in the next election, or I'll just have to spoil my ballot paper.
