Michele Moore, Emma Williamson, Kathleen Stock, Emma Hilton and Heather Brunskell-Evans.

Great line-up and sadly it couldn't be more timely.

I've been to a few of these public events organised by the Bristol Uni feminist society, they've been brilliant. Hopefully there won't be any daft kiddies standing on the table and crying as happened last time Heather B-E spoke there!

Looking forward to seeing you there severn. I was at the Heather Brunskell Evans one as well.
I'm also going to hear Helen Lewis and Helen Taylor speak as well. One on Difficult Women, the other on Why Women Read Fiction. I just can't remember which is which.

LancsHotpot · 02/03/2020 17:12

University staff are expected to be on strike on 13 March, in part over the gender pay gap. Please don't cross the picket line!

BelleWether · 02/03/2020 18:59

@LancsHotpot

An afterwork feminist event to celebrate Women's Day?

MaMaLa321 · 02/03/2020 22:24

I didn't see any support from Bristol university of Raquel Rosaria Sanchez (the protest by her professor being the honourable exception) so no, I'm not bothered about crossing any picket line

severnboring · 03/03/2020 08:51

Yes what happened to Raquel R-S at Bristol Uni is awful MaMa. To be fair, UCU members are striking against the university, but they of course don't give a shit about feminist academics either. The head of the UCU joins in with bullying them.
Neither their unis nor their union stand up for feminists but I'm very glad to have this opportunity to do so, regardless of what a new poster says about an evening, non work IWD event. Hmm

OP posts:
GCAcademic · 03/03/2020 08:52

I don't think UCU has any right to expect the solidarity of feminist academics after the way it has treated them.

severnboring · 03/03/2020 09:00

Totally agree GCAcademic. It's an abusive dynamic.

I left my union over this - there were those who argued 'stay and organise against it' which I understand, but in reality, there is a young man on a union salary (higher than mine) pushing this ideology, and I do not have the time to work unpaid against him, while giving the union a chunk of money each month for the privilege.

the protest by her professor being the honourable exception

That's Dr Emma Williamson, who's speaking at the event. Here's her statement at the time:

Basically, if you're magic trans, at Bristol Uni you can call your fellow students scum and called for them to be turfed out - when they're a woman of colour recently arrived in the UK - with impunity.

Thanks for this heads up. I have just bought a ticket & donated an equal amount, so there's a spare ticket if someone can't afford it. Looking forwards to this.

FannyCann · 12/03/2020 22:20

I was really looking forward to this, but it has been postponed due to coronavirus.

I'm sure it was the best decision under the circumstances but very disappointing.

Stay safe everyone. ThanksGin

stumbledin · 13/03/2020 00:45

FannyCann

Where does it say it is cancelled. The eventbrite page is still there with the option to buy tickets.

Some women may have left it to be a last minute decision depending on other committments.

Confused
FannyCann · 13/03/2020 03:14

@stumbledin

I received this email :

Dear attendees,
We have been looking forward to welcoming you to The Victoria Rooms tomorrow, 13th March 2020, for 'Feminist Academics Talk Back!'. However, we have made the decision to postpone our event. We are aware of health concerns regarding COVID-19 and take this issue very seriously.
We are sensitive to the expert, evidence-based information available. We are aware some of you may have traveled to affected areas, and we are being mindful of people in vulnerable populations who oftentimes attend our meetings in our decision-making process. We encourage you to stay updated on the situation and to follow the health recommendations issued by the relevant authorities on this matter.
We are happy to issue refunds. Alternatively, as ticket holders, you will be the first to know as soon as we are able to reschedule. We are delighted to have such amazing speakers scheduled to join us and are massively grateful to them for their understanding. We still get goosebumps and feel absolutely giddy about having sold out at The Victoria Rooms. We are very much looking forward to seeing all of you at our next public meeting, and then at the one after!
Our kindest regards,
Women Talk Back!

FannyCann · 13/03/2020 03:17

Email also says they have sold out, so hopefully the eventebrite site will not accept last minute purchases.

Hopefully it will be rescheduled before long.

WomanIsTaken · 13/03/2020 03:38

What a pity. But Bristol University has a confirmed case of corona virus and several students self isolating, so I can see why.

stumbledin · 13/03/2020 13:05

@FannyCann - thanks - and have been told it is on their facebook page. But eventbrite page says nothing and it implies you can still get tickets.

I've never set up an eventbrite page - and maybe they are hard to edit.

But yes, such a shame they have had to cancel.

If we go into lock down like parts of China, we may have to work out how to do online conferencing!

severnboring · 13/03/2020 13:27

It says postponed on the Eventbrite stumbledin

Gutted that this is postponed but it's definitely the right call.
I'm glad not to have to choose between this incredibly important fight and the potential risk to those of my loved ones who are in high risk categories.

It sold out - maybe when it does happen it can be even bigger!

Yes sorry - I must have been looking at a cached (?) page. When I refreshed I saw the message.
