Spotted in a Twitter Morning Star comment thread.

Makes a lot of sense of some of the rights arguments that are being used. And interesting wrt recent blurring that has led to accusations of *phobia relating to sexual orientation (or the notion of having one).

You know how you (rightfully) demand women have bodily autonomy in regards to their reproductive system? Trans people also want that.

Rather interesting development which is a logical creep from previous positions. No need for any interventions at all and certainly not beyond the cosmetic. If it's accepted as a political or liberation notion then self-ID flows from that.

It's like trying to leave a bad relationship where you find yourself constantly trying to work out the reasons for why their behaviour is strange, trying to make sense of what they say, trying to get a grasp on the situation - and expending vast amounts of mental energy running around focused on them and the wonder and complexity of them, because you have this vain, forlorn hope, that if you just try hard enough you might be able to repair this relationship. That relationship that the other person is taking no responsibility for, and is behaving like a selfish, narcissistic arse

This bears saying again - it's exactly what's going on.

Harrow is making a false equivalency between abortion and hormone treatment for you g people.

A better analogy would be hysterectomy or other forms of sterilization. Many, many doctors refuse to perform sterilization on woman under 35. Grown up, adult women who have either completed their families or never wanted one in the first place are not deemed sufficiently competent to make these decisions by current medical practitioners.

But hey, an 8 year old who believes in Santa and wants to change sex? Sure, they are Gillick competent.

I think there are a few problems with what this person is saying, but they are touching on something that is maybe a more fundamental, real, disagreement as well.

For one thing as many have noted, we don't all have the "right" for what are essentially cosmetic procedures funded by the public.

The second is that even if such changes were made, it really is a cosmetic change, not a real change of sex.

The first part is something that seems to come out of lack of information and experience. I've talked to younger people on occasion with similar misunderstandings about medical care and procedures which led them to make strange arguments.

The real question being hinted at though is the idea that we have the right o do whatever we want with our bodies and get other people to help us to it. Some people really see this as total, and think that we should be able to pay doctors or other practitioners to do all kinds of body modifications, remove body parts, and so on.

Other people think that this should be limited in some way, usually mainly by restricting what we allowed to hire people for.
