Can you please recommend me a book? Explaining women's rights to my DS (11)

I wonder if there is a book, or website that I could show my DS (11) to explain women's rights issues, and whether anyone could recommend one?

Backstory is that DS is Y6 and coming across some quite sexual language in the playground, and TBH I'm struggling to explain to him why this has such a negative impact on girls generally.

He's a thoughtful lad who is generally respectful, but this kind of feels like a window of opportunity. But I need to find an age-appropriate text, and the usual boy puberty books I've found don't really go there.

Thank you Daffodil

An extremely good question op, not sure of the answer yet but following with interest.

Interested also.

Maybe something from a history series about women who had to dress as men to become drs or who had to escape from forced marriage?

Oh or what about Malala’s book?

All makes it slightly less confronting for him since it’s historical or a tale of another country but the principles are enduring.

I Am Malala

Dd read this in y6

SpeedofaSloth · 28/02/2020 08:13

Does the Malala book touch on the threat of sexual violence at all? If so, that might be what I'm looking for TBH.

Don’t know. Will ask DD tonight.

I've got a book about the suffragettes from the library - not sure if the name but it was told as a story rather than a history book.

I think it was "Women Rose Up" or similar. Will post a link if I can find it.

Read with him the young adult novel Speak.

SpeedofaSloth · 28/02/2020 18:22

I've put I Am Malala on his Kindle.

I'll keep Speak in mind, maybe after he's read Malala and we've had a chat. I note it's 12 and up on Amazon, he's 11.5 now so it will probably be OK I guess.

I think I might look into some of the suffrage

My son aged 13 picked up (without my knowing) my copy of ‘why does he do that?’ and read it. (I would not have offered it.)
I’m not sure it’s made him aware of women’s rights, but he’s certainly now aware of predatory behaviour, and its impact on women. He tends to pick up on it on tv etc now.

That's really interesting to hear, Germaine.
