Who would you vote for deputy Labour leader?

I’m a sometimes lurker on the feminist board and was wondering who would you vote for deputy. I’ve not been following the contest too closely (although was put off Dawn Butler’s comments about children being born without a sex).

My first preference at the moment is Angela Rayner.

I think Angela Rayner was the first to sing up to the trans rights pledge so I definitely won't be considering her. I think someone said Richard Burgon was their MP and had made some positive comments in a CLP meeting - does that ring any bells for anyone? I need to research the others properly before I decide.

Catsrus · 26/02/2020 13:26

Angela Rayner has drunk the kool aid. Ian Murray seems sensible to me. Burgon is a too closely allied with the extreme left to be able to bring unity IMO

nonsenceagain · 26/02/2020 13:55

Burgon unequivocally said the other day that biological sex is real. I know it's mad that this seems like a big deal these days, but there you go. I think he's trying to put distance between himself and the other candidates. The others are all out of the question for me - especially Dawn Butler and Angela Rayner.

Is there a box for “None of the above”?!

Michelleoftheresistance · 26/02/2020 14:35

Honestly, the most batshit one of the whole lot of them on the day. The one I can rely on to put the worst of the insanity in the public eye and bring on the end as fast as possible. Put this awful, awful mess of a party out of its misery and we may, just possibly, get a sane socialist party out of the ashes.

penelopepitstopsgain · 26/02/2020 14:42

I've just voted and its Ian Murray for me mainly because he has the public backing of the Jewish community and having attended a recent hustings, I feel he is credible enough to put an end to Labour's longstanding antisemitism issues - just commented in the Guardian re the dire choices in this election!

LiterallyProblematic · 26/02/2020 14:42

Richard Burgon is reported you be gender critical. However he has publicly said that he backs GRA reform. I’m not voting for any of them.

This is what I thought but RB isn’t doing it for me either. It’s disappointing!

I am not a Labour voter, nor a socialist, but I agree with your analysis. The departure from external reality is really damaging politics and the Conservatives are on board with the lunacy. Someone needs to hit reverse.

Mockersisrightasusual · 26/02/2020 16:09

There is the probably apocryphal statement attributed to Richard Nixon: "Who's going to shoot me with Spiro T Agnew as Vice-President?"

7dayslater · 26/02/2020 16:12

Richard Burgon, I think. Disappointing bunch though.

NYnachos · 26/02/2020 16:17

I went to a hustings and thought they were all crap.
Dr Rosena went on about holding dying trans patients in her arms (which I didn't believe)
Angela Raynor came across as not very bright & shouldn't be trusted with anything important
Dawn Butler talks nonsense anyway with her "babies are born without a sex" rubbish
Ian was a bit too TWAW and came out with some other stuff about expelling people that put me right off him
Richard was my one hope, but then said TWAW and TRAHR and sang the praises of mermaids.

NotAtMyAge · 26/02/2020 16:58

I subscribe to the Labour List daily email and today there was an article about Richard Burgon which had this passage in it:

On the pledges of the Labour Campaign for Trans Rights, which he has also declined to sign, Burgon said: “I support all of the pledges of that organisation, apart from there’s one that gave me cause for concern.

“It seems to me that one of the pledges was risking dismissing thousands of feminists in the Labour Party as members of a hate group. Obviously, there is no place for hate groups within the Labour Party.

“But I’m very concerned that we shouldn’t go down the road of dismissing thousands of feminists in the Labour Party, whether we agree with them or not, as being people who should be drummed out or expelled from Labour Party.”

So still willing to go down the GRA reform route, but prepared to stand back and think and not cave in like the female candidates.

I'm afraid I think Angela Rayner has it in the bag already, but I'll be voting for Ian Murray as a sensible voice.

It was a Private Eye cover. I can't find an image online but I used to have a copy.

Not in the least bit helpful to the thread but remembering made me Smile

wellbehavedwomen · 26/02/2020 17:13

I'm standing back from the party and watching, right now. It's going to be a messy few years while all this implodes, but women are fighting back with increasing success, and we will win. Meanwhile:

You think rapists belong in women's prisons, and that any male who wants to should access all women's spaces, and that the very definition of what a woman is should be erased?

You're unelectable. And will remain so.

SpeedofaSloth · 26/02/2020 19:02

I think I'll be voting for Ian Murray. I can't vote for Rayner.

transdimensional · 26/02/2020 19:37

It's testament to the stupidity of many of the candidates that instead of just signing the established LGBT Labour group's pledge (as Starmer did) - which is bad enough - they signed a pledge by a new group (the Labour Campaign for Trans Rights - founding statement issued on 10th Feb.) that isn't affiliated to the party and doesn't necessarily represent anyone.

Helpfull enough, LCTR has recently tweeted confirming which candidates have signed its pledge. These are Rebecca Long-Bailey and Lisa Nandy for the leadership, and Angela Rayner, Dawn Butler
and Dr Rosena Allin-Khan for the deputy leadership.

HavelockVetinari · 04/03/2020 09:13

I've just voted for Ian Murray. Rayner was my least preferred option.

SpeedofaSloth · 05/03/2020 20:37

Same here.
