A NASA Mathematician who literally helped put men on the moon has died age 101.

She said her greatest contribution to space exploration was making "the calculations that helped sync Project Apollo’s Lunar Lander with the moon-orbiting Command and Service Module." In other words, helping to put men on the moon in 1969.

What a Shero. I’ve not seen the film Hidden Figures discussed in the article, so I’m gong to put that right. So many incredible woman who contributed to the space programmes.

RIP Katherine Johnson

A great woman

BookWitch · 24/02/2020 21:36

RIP Katherine Johnson. Amazing woman.

I highly recommend the book Hidden Figures, loads more in it than the film (which was also brilliant)

Her colleague Mary Jackson (first black female engineer at NASA) was also a big influence in the US Girl Scouts and was a key figure in ending segregation in the organisation significantly earlier than the US Boy Scouts. (in her spare time when she wasn't putting men in Space)

'Shero' is a ridiculous non-word tho, and I don't see why Banana needs attacking for pointing it out.

Otherwise yes, an amazing woman, fully agree.

Babdoc · 24/02/2020 21:54

I thought the female of hero was heroine? Hidden figures was a fabulous film, I loved it. Great to see these amazing women getting some very belated recognition.

DeRigueurMortis · 24/02/2020 22:04

RIP Katherine.

Genius, trail blazer and inspiration.

I agree that 'shero' is a bit silly, but you can point this out without telling someone they are 'far gone' and need to grow up. That's just rude.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/02/2020 22:13

I've found her to be such an inspirational woman. I learnt about her from the films- going to find the book aswell. I thought the calculators were amazing.

NotAGirl · 24/02/2020 22:30

Amazing woman

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2020 22:40

Amazing woman.

(A post policing the OPs language as the first response to it is bloody disrespectful of the inspirational woman who has just died. )

DidoLamenting · 24/02/2020 22:42

She was an amazing woman

“Shero” is a ridiculous word

Agreed on both counts.

DidoLamenting · 24/02/2020 22:43

I think a stupid , made- up word is disrespectful of this inspirational woman.

BoogieFeet · 24/02/2020 22:47

RIP Katherine Johnson

An amazing woman.

NonnyMouse1337 · 24/02/2020 23:13

I've been meaning to watch the film Hidden Figures. I'll buy the book as well.

What an incredible woman. RIP Katherine Johnson.

Languishingfemale · 24/02/2020 23:30

Just watched the news clips about her. Fantastic woman and so pleased that she was properly recognised.

QuantumEntanglement · 24/02/2020 23:50

May she Rest In Peace - so happy she lived long enough to see her achievements and contributions recognized.

Please can the language police take their pedantry to the appropriate place - Pedants’ Corner - or st least another thread. Not the time or the place for such petty bickering.

Tanith · 25/02/2020 00:11

According to this article, the word ‘shero’ was first used in 1892:

This.....

Just to add the film is very good but the book is excellent.

Sometimes it's easy to forget the battles women have fought to be recognised and especially so as a black women in that era her achievements should be legendary.

Sometimes I think part of the issue today with generation Z is that many of those young women are too far removed from struggles of women in the past to appreciate how hard won our rights were and threat we face as lobby groups seek to erode them.

I've made DSD and DS watch the movie (under initial sufferance) but within 20 mins they were captivated by the stories of these 3 brilliant women.

truthontrial · 25/02/2020 00:34

Yes shero indeed.

I did see Hidden Numbers, and was blown away by it, as the women did do the groundwork for the men, and also got divisions between white and black removed as had previously had to run to a municipal buildings some blocks away to use the toilets!!!

She got pulled up on taking too long, and then said that she had to travel considerable distance to jist use the toilet, so they opened the loos to all female and removed the segregation!

She also picked up on the mistakes in the projections that the entirely male team had made.

The astronaut only wanted her to do the calculations in the end. Put his life in her hands, literally.

A true inspiration, blazing a trail. What a shero.

Fantasiaa · 25/02/2020 00:35

An amazing woman. Happy she lived a long life Smile

truthontrial · 25/02/2020 00:37

...and stop telling women what to do and what words are ok!

JackieFazakerley · 25/02/2020 00:46

I'm relieved that there are tributes here to an incredible woman.
Someone posted in chat and only one reply. Sad to see.
Thankfully, I've found you here celebrating her achievements.
What a mind she had!

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2020 00:55

Hidden Figures was an object lesson in that feeling every woman has had. When you have to convince the man you know more than them. Even though it should be blindingly obvious. She must have felt that so often.

Bigblue20 · 25/02/2020 02:31

@MrsTerryPratchett how did they keep their will? and their cool? When you know you are right and better than them?

We stand on their shoulders, we really do.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2020 02:32

I know. Not just a mathematical genius but all that strength as well.

Topseyt · 25/02/2020 02:41

What an inspirational woman!

I must now watch Hidden Figures in the near future.
