I found this a very refreshing article. Gave me hope.

“When I was little, like five or six years old, I wanted to be a girl. I never felt like I was a girl or like I was supposed to be a girl. That means that I’m not transgender. I don’t feel like I’m in the wrong body. I feel like I’m in the right body. I’m just me.”

I guess I mean gender is not just sex "stereotypes".

Gender is how sex, the realities of being a species that is social and reproduces sexually, instantiates itself in our legal, social, and artistic lives.
We will always have customs that relate to sex, we will always signal each other about it, we will always express our experience as sexed beings in literature and art, we will have laws pertaining to it. We will always notice differing tendencies between men and women behaviourally or physically, even small ones, and that will contribute to our sense of what men and women are like. We will probably always have male culture and female culture to some extent, based on shared experience and solidarity.

As long as these things exist and go on in human lives and societies there will be gender.

Still don't see it. We can just say 'sex-based' as opposed to gendered. Job done.
