Owen Jones has retweeted someone saying that "transphobia" and "anti-semitism" are the same thing.

This is new schtick - "it's just like antisemitism". Fuck off is it.

Lordfrontpaw · 16/02/2020 14:52

It’s an attempt to equate the suffering of 6m Jews to the ‘suffering of misgendering’.

Playing the victim🙄. Most oppressed group in the history of the world indeedy.

YourVagesty · 16/02/2020 14:57

Oh fuck off LOJ

Just fuck the fuck off

Freespeecher · 16/02/2020 15:03

I've seen such piggybacking in other areas too - 'Climate Change Denier' has definite (and deliberate) echoes of 'Holocaust Denier'.

Dave Chappelle has made similar points in the past about not being happy about how some special interest groups compare their experience to that of Black people, centuries of slavery etc.

(I do wonder if the recent Trans pledges are inspired by the anti-semitism pledge that Corbyn etc refused to sign up to in the run up to the GE. Come to think of it I think there's an Islamophobia pledge out there too - some reasonable points, others a bit more controversial to say the least - iirc #12 would mean the government officially recognising Palestine).

xxyzz · 16/02/2020 15:34

Sure the Trans pledges ARE inspired by the anti-Semitism pledges.

The big difference being that Labour has a massive problem with anti-Semitism in its ranks, such that it is being investigated by the EHRC over it - so the pledges are needed.

The suggestion that trans people have faced the same kind of discrimination within Labour as Jews have in recent years is more than tin-eared, it's an attempt to claim victim status that trans people have not (thankfully for them) earned.

And yes, it's another subtle way of minimising the very real anti-Semitism in the Labour Party - by comparing it to another group who have faced zero discrimination in Labour.

xxyzz · 16/02/2020 15:36

tl;dr - it's an attempt to equate the 'literal violence' suffered by transpeople being misgendered with the mass murder of 6 million Jews.

Insensitive isn't the half of it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 16/02/2020 16:12

Does not compute.

Imnobody4 · 16/02/2020 16:15

Stephen Doughty tried this kind of elision in a parliamentary committee on transphobia in media. He drew attention to references to 'Trans' Lobby being like the 'Jewish' Lobby. Times editor replied well we would refer to the Jewish Lobby if there was one.

Whatisthisfuckery · 16/02/2020 16:37

Didn’t the statement of Mrs B in Harry’s case make the argument that Harry is exactly the type of person who 80 years ago would have been spouting anti Semitic rhetoric? And didn’t the judge write in his conclusions that Mrs B’s arguments at times pushed the outer reaches of rationality?

I shall rest my case there.

nauticant · 16/02/2020 16:44

Well recalled Whatisthisfuckery.

61. She goes on to describe the Claimant as a ‘bigot’ who ‘eighty years ago ... would have been making the same comments about Jewish people’. It is not clear what comments she is specifically referring to, but I understand she regards the Claimant as someone who eighty years ago would, by his writings, have contributed to the socio-political conditions in Germany which paved the way for the Holocaust and the murder of millions of Jews. She also says that over different decades he would have made offensive comments about gay people and black and Asian people.

PityParty4one · 16/02/2020 17:15

Anyone read this comment on the same thread Hmm

pachyderm · 16/02/2020 17:51

There are some women very involved in those "hate organisations" Owen hates so much who actually are Jewish, not sure how Owen squares that circle. Tosser. Angry

FrogsFrogs · 16/02/2020 18:00

OMFG not sure what else to say

Is there anything this lobby won't piggyback on?

I'm genuinely shocked.

The thing I've read on here about how GC feminists with years of activism around LGB and women's rights are now being aligned with bigots, has anyone thought about how silly that is...

This is a gross move tbh. Combo of. Appropriation of extreme anti semitic ideas. Plus, linking into the quiverful type stuff out of USA. Which is a different topic..

And Owen says yep?!

Critical thinking has never been one of Own’s strong points.
