Blended surname

Has anyone created a blended or double barrelled surname when getting married?

I'm not keen on taking his name, like the idea of something that represents both of us, isn't so patriarchal and also want our child to have the same name.

Keen to hear people's experiences when creating something new. Has it caused any issues? Raised eyebrows?

@TreestumpsAndTrampolines yes I can imagine this leading to some very interesting combinations!

I think we've decided to double barrel my partner's name with my middle name which is a maiden name passed down the female line. We'll all go by the same surname on official docs although can continue to use our own surnames professionally. This is the plan at the mo and seems a good set up to me. However, I do often change my mind!

There is something very liberating about creating something new that recognises both people equally.

Next question...to hyphen or not?

Our surname was created by my husband’s family merging two names a few hundred years ago...I must admit the result is not what I would have settled on had I been the one doing the merging - it often needs spelling out because it sounds similar to some other surnames, or is misspelled/mispronounced by others....

Maybe hyphen better?

Yes I think hyphenated would be the way to go.

Now considering using my name for all of us instead. He's happy to do it certainly sticks two fingers up at the patriarchy. The issue we have with double barrelling is that it would give our child a very long name which seems a bit unfair.

Anyone out there who's husband has taken theirs? I've never come across it tbh.
